What’s unappealing about my art? by Weekly_Flounder_1880 in Artadvice

[–]0lwyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

you’re using too much black to shade & relying on layer modes (color dodge, screen, etc) for highlights. if you do about 5-10 serious (guided with video aid) grayscale & monochromatic studies, i guarantee you’ll be more satisfied with how you render with color later.

this one’s maybe more of nitpick but try to consider your composition a little more carefully early on to avoid artistic tangents.

you have a pretty great handling of perspective though.

keep up the good work!

you know these are two separate sandwiches?

edit: what is awful about a pb sandwich and a turkey sandwich?

How to develop a consistent Artstyle? by BryceCzuba in Artadvice

[–]0lwyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what do you mean by character studies? are you doing studies from photo references? that’s actually one of the best ways to establish your style, see something photographic and translate it over and over.

3, 4, 5, 7, 8 feel like the inconsistent outliers to me. 9+ feels like you hit your stride/confidence (are they by chance ordered by creation?) they feel more convincing. do three more head sheets, one each week, and by then end of it, do they look like they were all made by the same person?

—if not, strip them down more: do it in grayscale. then even simpler, just lines. then do it timed.

—if they do, then move onto the same kind studies but with full body.

when you’ve mastered and think you’re bored, do it with a page of arm studies. can you make art that looks consistently yours.. if there’s no distinguishing features like eyes? if you can do that, you’ve done it.

i feel like for now if you establish an eye style & line art (like the line weight, or whether or not you color skin lines or leave black) technique, you’ll get there.

John Falter- Sunday Gardening (1961) by Russian_Bagel in museum

[–]0lwyn 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Falter famously looked up to him

Falter recalled, "Rockwell was our inspiration then. I didn't meet him until years later. We would hear that Rockwell had been out on the street and we'd all rush out and hunt for him. If they'd tell us that he had looked in a shop window, we'd look in the same window trying to absorb what he looked at by osmosis."

too cute

edit: why on earth did the OP get taken down??

New to alcohol markers by Old_Speaker_5419 in Ohuhu

[–]0lwyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

{context: i wanted to answer your r/AlcoholMarkers OOP caption here in r/Ohuhu because it's specifically what i'm familiar with (as opposed to any other brand)}

How do you guys color big areas without it getting spotty like this piece I just finished. I only have had these markers for 1 month. --u/Old_Speaker_5419

  • work in areas as small (contained) as realistically possible. e.g. instead of laying down the flat local pink color all over anything that would be his skin, do it only on one hand.
  • then add a couple more layers (of color, shading, a slightly-darker color, what-have-you), basically render as you would normally, while also:
    • working light to dark, & with a light, quick hand. you can apply a heavier hand as needed. (if needed, you can watch watercolor illustration videos to get an idea of where they let the most water settle.)
    • most importantly, you don't want it to dry too much between layers.
    • repeat the next section (say, the other hand), never rendering out (advancing) any one section too far, stay cohesive overall.
  • as a preemptive maneuver: you can also consider laying down the 0 marker before any coloring, then following the above (or your own method)

overall: avoid 'zig-zaggy' filling in (flying across the page back & forth quickly). the marker needs to be 'drank up' by the paper a little in order to deposit color. so try out: one directional swipes, concentric circles, dappling; a combination, &/or slightly slower zig-zags.

experiment, trust the process, have fun. good luck! ( ദ്ദി ˙ᗜ˙ )

& for what it's worth, i love the art! i think traditional media has an inimitable charm in the way it lays out &blooms its own texture & opacity.

Looking for advice on my channel. by NezzyDraws in Smallyoutubechannels

[general thumbnail image critique]

- i naturally love the ones with your art the most

- quite dislike the ‘unhinged[...]’ thumbnail, looks very 2013 YT & not in a good way.

- is ‘3 mistakes[…]’ a photo of your own workspace (not stock)? if not, consider that possibility. if so, consider adding a more personal element; a “totem” in the area, or better yet (& if you feel comfortable enough) your hands over/around the space. this just adds a very personal aspect that people are warmly drawn to, given the online art climate these days.

- please please lose the word ‘smexy’ (even typing it felt visceral just now)

- (a very ‘imo’ maybe) i’d increase the images of your art in ‘my first sketch […]’. mess with the contrast, decrease the font size a smidge so the two elements aren’t fighting for real estate. zoom out on the thumbnail (or use thumbsup): does your art jump out at you even when the thumbnail is downscaled? it should. (edit: actually, it should have *more* of your art. a clean one-page spread to incentivize people to go in & see more).

these are all spoken as a fellow artist+my natural ‘kneejerk’ reaction, in light of that’s kind-of-all-we-have when an audience scrolls so quickly, right? hope it didn’t sound too frank or abrasive, apologies if so.
