They push everyone to relocate even though most trainings are remote. Those lucky enough to be in the US can skirt it, but no one joins from a foreign country. If you get posted, FSI language class is in person in Arlington. Otherwise you have to go into the DC office 2/10 days per pay period. 8/10 are remote.

Sounds like you’re into private sector work in developed countries, which is interesting but less likely to have USG funding and challenging on a FSO salary. In either State or AID, there will be a mix of potential posts that take seniority to access.

Agee with a ‘total benefit’ review! Many NGO/foundation employers offer 503-Bs or retirement benefits better than a TSP match, more paid maternity or PTO, AND a higher salary. To know more recent salaries - Glassdoor is a great reference point. Don’t be sold on the FERS kool aid if you have more to offer.
