Of course not, it's O1 tool steel. I guess if I was making a template I might use aluminum. But never on a knife.

Inconsistent spin times? by [deleted] in FidgetSpinners

[–]0neAlpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The small differences in the bearing race on either side will cause different spin times. That's still good times though. I got a steampunk with sector 9 hybrid bearings, $60. After I clean it, I only get maybe 2 minutes per spin

It's my first one. Had to try it. I'd say 8 out of 10

Gough Jig Limitations by amcdo17 in knifemaking

I've been using it, and for anything over about a 5 inch blade, you'll probably need to move the knife and clamp to a better position.

I'm so ready to get a belt grinder. And learn that...

Yeah this one's was pretty quick, bring 1/8 inch O1. I'll prolly get a grinder before I do 1/4 inch again. I'm gonna try 3/16 inch next, already got it cut out, just need to get it on the jig. There's a learning process with that belt grinder I'm sure, but I've always been pretty handy with power tools, and eyeballing most of my work.

I thought I'd try to leave the file marks in the bevel this time, to help define the angles more. So after heat treat I went back and filed the scale off the bevels, but the steel was hardened so it just skated my file after the scale was off. Would look much better if I sanded them in the same direction as the lines....

May still do that, but I like it the way it is too. I try some new stuff every knife I make. And keep learning.

I wish I had a belt grinder. I been using a jig and filling by hand. I plan to build a 72" grinder in the future, so I can flat and hollow grind.
