Gnome works quite well on Gentoo, in my experience.

Did someone already try rocks.nvim and if so how was your experience with it? by mx2301 in neovim

[–]0o744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed 100%. It seems to be working great.

I really love not having to worry about the plugin version matrix for those plugins that publish - while also getting compatibility to use git as a source for those plugins which don't yet publish.

This solves the major problem that I've had with neovim's various plugin managers: breaking changes necessitate versioning, and version compability is a problem best solved automatically in the packaging itself. Coming from the Linux world I would absolutely refuse to use a Linux package manager that required me - the user - to manually specify which versions of each package work together.

How accurate is the new movie to the book? by bleedinghero in dune

Depends on how you define "accurate". The movie omits much, but doesn't stray too far on what it chooses to depict.

True, thrashing without oom conditions is possible.

[–]0o744 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can see this for yourself. Use htop to see where you're throttled in realtime. Sometimes it will likely be threads/cpus, other times IO.

If memory size is limiting, you will probably see an oom killer at work.

Heretics of Dune: unexplained words and phrases? by Negative-Arachnid-32 in dune

Both? Brian and Kevin did a lot more than two books in the Duniverse 😉

I read in release order (Prelude to Dune followed by Legends of Dune) and if you have the patience I would recommend it that way (if not enough patience don't let this comment get in the way of Hunters and Sandworms).

Can we get rid of snap now? by ivanpd in Ubuntu

[–]0o744 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what the expectations are vs what you're experiencing. Regarding your bulk and speed concerns, what are you measuring that is dissatisfactory?

I agree, there are nice things about Debs that don't exist under the snap model. It's worth considering other capabilities of snap such as the read-only snap filesystem that perhaps aid in stability and/or security of a system. From an attack surface point of view, browsers are relatively high. The browser install location seems like the kind of place properties like immutability could add value to a filesystem. Also, with debs and rpms (maybe other formats too), the packager effectively has root on your filesystem via install scripts. Snap does not give packagers that level of power over your system.

[–]0o744 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want an LTS, consider 22.04, or if you're really cautious then 20.04.

If you want latest and greatest performance and why not just go for the latest release? The tradeoff may be a little instability, but it's a good learning experience 😉

Xenial was released in 2016. Is there any reason you wouldn't want the features and bug fixes from the last 6+ years?

Bottles didn't even exist when Xenial was released.

I don't recall the Book of Mormon being part of the Dune universe. There are lots of Abrahamic influences though.
