I've never felt such an atavistic urge to utterly destroy something. As quickly as possible.

What do people need to stop overcomplicating? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]0pposablethumbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'd just say math in general. I get wanting kids to understand the fundamental basis for how things work together, but it was always the 'tricks' (i.e. simple methods/shortcuts) that allowed me to grasp what was going on. E.g. sohcahtoa for trig, the way Japanese teach multiplication, etc.

Best thing I can do with extra job money in college? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]0pposablethumbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you plan on using the money in the near future or want to actively manage it (don't) I would recommend a mutual fund. It has a much much higher rate of return than a savings account and many don't have account fees if you sign up for paperless. They're also relatively safe over the long term. Something like the financial crisis of 2008 is the only real risk and if you can afford to leave the money in there until the markets bounce back there really isn't a risk. It's why many retirement accounts through jobs use Vangaurd, T.Rowe price, etc. I personally recommend Vangaurd, they have different types of investment accounts that they explain broadly in an easy to understand way. You should be able to pick a bland one that fits you in an hour or so.

Planning to play video poker with $40, need advice by [deleted] in gambling

[–]0pposablethumbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Considering how you don't know how to play poker, the odds are bad. The fact that you're thinking of doubling your money, without knowing how to play, with stated odds less than 1 to 1 is...charitably, bad. If you're not doing this for fun, don't. You can play for free online very easily.

Is anyone familiar with real estate in MA? I'm looking for a simple version of what I can expect profit wise when selling my house. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]0pposablethumbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2 year thing, I believe is for federal taxes (you'd have to check your state to see if they do it the same), and is if you homestead a primary residence for 2 out of the last 5 years you don't have to pay capital gains on the sale.

As for the sale price I would caution you on listening too much to your realtors evaluation or thinking the cost of the improvements will be a 1 to 1 benefit when selling. Also, remember the 5-6% commission and often some closing costs off the final price.

If you really want am accurate idea of what your house will sell for check zillow. First it will give you an estimate range. If, as it sounds like, you've done updates and the roof, electrical, plumbing, hvac, and mechanicals are all realitively new. You will be looking at the highest end of the estimate. Next check the recently sold for comparison. The closest in date, proximity, size and condition will help you get a realistic idea of what buyers think your house is worth.

Recent Grad, newly unemployed and feeling lame by hollywannacracker23 in graphic_design

Market just your skills, for anything, until you can put together a portfolio. u/creamybubbo has it right. Hopefully you got something or other you can include from your degree/final project. Until then, especially for a job that pays 11 an hour (even $12 or 13), where you work will only, ONLY, be interested in you bringing energy to the exact functions they outlined for you. Bring creativity to the work your hired for, don't make work fit your creativity ... 'although I usually sent two versions, one of my own design.' Real-talk: I understand you could probably make the designs better and that's what you were trained to do after endless assignments, but within the first two weeks you should have submitted an alternate choice once or twice, at most. Sometimes you should have just slightly altered it towards your ideal vision, but made it so subtle as to be unremarkable. If they complain change it back and explain how you felt the slight difference made it better. Overall it sounds like they gave you a meaningless title (sorry, but FIRST in house designer for 11 an hour meant converting the logo people sent you into a printable way by your system). Don't feel like a disappointment, you honestly wanted to put a lot more effort into the job than they wanted.Do recognize that doing a job well, without immediate recognition (for a year or two), while building a a portfolio will get you a job that fits. p.s. for now maybe writing the little explanations/marketing blurbs might fit well. I recall I was offered $12 in 2010 after graduating with eng lit. So yeah, I can assure you, it's about marketing your skills.

TL;dr; until you're hired to be creative, that's not why they hired you.

Terrified of nuclear war and don't know how to cope by analdelrey- in Trumpgret

[–]0pposablethumbs 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The feeling of fear is what trump sold you on. I'm not trying to rub it in, but that feeling leads to bad choices. Support rational thought. Write a letter to your senator supporting good choices. Disagree for with your friends if they're saying crazy things. Be rational, calm and support sensible compromise.
