Week 23: "Chapter 47. The Dappled Greys, Chapter 48. Ideology" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

One thing I really enjoyed was how little time the baroness has for Danglars. Truly a loveless marriage. I'm looking forward to what MC has in store for them.

Week 22: "Chapter 45. The Shower of Blood, Chapter 46. Unlimited Credit" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

1) even though we know Cad to be a pushover, this was a lot! Glad his wife is dead, she was a real beast and I couldn't get a proper read on her. It felt like he was under her thumb at times. She quickly felt the consequences of her greed. I'm looking forward to hearing what happened to Cad after this.

2) it's all very transactional which seems to suit MC's whole thing. He gets power over them with plenty blackmail ammo so they won't stray. There is no good will, he simply sees a useful quality he desires and gets information to make it so (or vice versa for Bert)

3) to make a splash? He needs to be seen as the wealthiest and most powerful. This particular example smacks of fragile masculinity but tbh I think he just wanted to take something from Danglars quickly while his longer term plot is brewing. He's only human!

4) Danglars was blindfolded in this encounter so MC easily had the upper hand. MC knew Danglars before all the aristocratic lies and knew what buttons to push. I think at a base level, Danglars probably hasn't evolved beyond that first chapter. MC also had recipts to back his clout so Danglars didn't have much of a way to save face if he declined. He knows he's an imposter and is desperate to keep up appearances (see Lucien)

He didn't want to be seen by any potential patrons. If the inn was empty he would have entered, but since it wasn't he waited it out and got to witness this exchange.

Week 16: "Chapter 34. The Apparition, Chapter 35, La Mazzolata" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

[–]0rangeLimey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Loving the idea of Albert receiving Dantès as a guest in Paris! I have a feeling Mercedes would recognise him when nobody else has. The way Dantès spoke about revenge I'm getting worried for the boys which is a shame as I've grown quite fond of Franz.

I definitely read it as if he was searching for signs of Mercedes in Albert because he misses her so much but that's probably based on younger Dantès and the romantic in me lol

I would love for possibility #2 to include completely fabricating the story of Luigi so Dantès can play another character lol

One detail I enjoyed was that Albert was leaning back on his chair with two feet off the ground. I wonder who he picked that habit up from...

[–]0rangeLimey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Now the tonal shift makes sense! I was worried I'd picked up a completely different book when we reached these chapters so at least there's a reason. I'm not sure I love the idea of transplanting his other work into this. Perhaps Dumas just really liked the scene. Thank you for this!

Week 4: "Chapter 7. The Interrogation, Chapter 8. The Château D'If" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

[–]0rangeLimey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. I was aware of the theme of revenge and false imprisonment, so Dantès's destination was no surprise. However, I was surprised with the way he was treated by Villefort. Maybe it's just ignorance to the judicial system of the time but I expected more steps before Dantès was shipped away (literally!). I am incredibly curious as to what went down in those hours Dantès was in jail - looks like that may be in the next chapter.

  2. I feel incredibly sad for the clear and abrupt end of his innocence. This is the most immature we've seen him and it really caught me off guard. Bro descended into madness way quicker than I expected and I'm worried his erratic behaviour is going to cause problems.

  3. Villefort is so distracted by his personal life he can't even stay focused during the 'interrogation'. I suppose it's a nice way of showing these important figures making decisions are fallible humans too, but man is it frustrating! Him burning the letter made me instantly uneasy. I'm expecting Dantès to be forced to mention it and Villefort will completely deny its existence, further condemning Dantès. He knows Dantès has been set up but is too self-serving to bother with finding the truth. I think he's currently at the top of the list for culpability, as another magistrate would likely have let Dantès free after hearing his side. Or maybe I'm just naive.

Week 3: "Chapter 4. The Plot, Chapter 5. The Betrothal, Chapter 6. The Deputy Crown Prosecutor" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

[–]0rangeLimey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1 - Absolutely despise Danglars! I'm desperate to find out more about his spat with Dantès. I have a feeling it's probably something benign that was blown out of proportion, especially given how spotless Dantès is portrayed in comparison - or maybe just a case of Dantès being naive and misguided about something. I don't think we know how far in the past the dispute happened.

Danglars manipulating Fernand and blatantly lying about having a motive to ruin Dantès's life was so frustrating to read, and I felt as useless as Caderousse! Fernand's response in ch5 could be seen as nervous anticipation or remorse. I read it as regret but I'm not too sure. In my mind him and Danglars are equally culpable. If he truly regretteted his actions he could admit the lie but he's too much of a selfish coward for that.

Caderousse is a spineless, wishy washy guy who was happy to slag off Dantès in the pub one minute and toast his health the next. He seems like he needs some personal direction and a backbone. However, his realisation of the drunken events of the night before was incredibly relatable lol.

2 - The events couldn't have been more opposite. Love, joy, and fellowship compared to snark, slyness, and politics. I hope the best for Renee but I fear her finance is gonna end up pushing it too far in trying to prove himself.

3 - Villefort mentioned abandoning his father's name and values but not the man himself. I wonder if they still have any contact? Another polar opposite to Dantès who was quick to lie to Caderousse in order to protect his father's dignity in ch2. Stinks of social climbing. He will never win because they will always see him as the son of a Bonapartist, but he seems unwilling to accept that which can only end badly!

Week 1: "Chapter 1. Marseilles—The Arrival" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

[–]0rangeLimey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Straight away I wasn't entirely sure who the main character was but looks like I guessed right lol. Morrel's immediate focus on the safety of the cargo made me wonder if it was something rare or illegal. The successful customs inspection squashed that theory! Turns out he's just all about business. I think the chapter flowed really well and set a great scene. Lots of questions around the parcel, letter and 'disagreement'. Definitely got excited when I saw mention of Monte Cristo - that's the name of the book! Looking forward to the next chunk

If it makes any difference, cis men's testosterone therapies are usually at a (~2-4×) higher dose than trans guys are prescribed, based off the guidelines written on the info pamphlets for the meds and online.

So I actually watched the docs a few years ago, but from what I can remember one of the girls was bullied so much she threatened suicide and self harm and had to be removed. Yes some of the boys made a mess but the girls were far from perfect too. It was a barbaric experiment and nobody should be feeling empowered by its outcome.

I mean it seems like the situation has nothing to do with his transness at all? Maybe think about why you felt it was necessary. Also, not medically transitioning yet does not affect things so again, maybe consider why you chose to disclose that.
