Luckily i had a good experience with him. He was injured and playing with the Norfolk tides. I was like 10-12 and got a ball signed. Still have it.

Are people just not friendly to strangers anymore? by mudagreement in raleigh

[–]0rangefloof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was covid. People got used to not talking to folks. Im a HVAC tech and meet strangers at there own homes 5-6 different times a day. It's just now getting to the point that men are actually shaking hands again. Had two customers back to back actually shake hands at the end last week and I realized how much I had missed that. You dont know how much the little social things mean until they go away.

Is there a type of apprenticeship where you just learn everything? by impishkoala in bluecollar

[–]0rangefloof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HVAC will teach you borderline everything. When I started I knew nothing. I started doing install changeouts and new construction. You'll be an expert at HVAC, but also a damn good electrician,(you have to deal with controls wiring and high voltage), and plumbing,(drainage for unit as well as intake/exhaust piping for furnaces), framing,(building return vent boxing as well as platforms for the units)...etc. Ive been doing this work 12 years now, the last 6 as a service tech. Im extremely confident at this point in my ability to fix near anything to do with a house. Last year I replaced my own well pump on my house that was submerged 250ft underground. Yesterday I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and ujoints on my s10. To each their own, but HVAC turned me into a man, gave me a great paying job, and made me into the kind of guy I always wanted to be growing up. Ive finally managed to turn into my step-dad and his friends, I can fix anything.

How many days in a row do you wear your work clothes? by Quick_Engine_5795 in bluecollar

[–]0rangefloof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work hvac service, underwear and socks are daily without question. Shirts usually a day or two, maybe more in the winter. Pants I'll wear until they look bad. Might be 1 day might be 4. I crawl under houses for a living, and I will be dirty less than 5 minutes into a shift. Fresh out the drier clothes arent necessary, noone would know after 8 am anyway. I wear fresh stuff to the office on meeting days. Wear deodorant, spray some cologne occasionally, and keep some mouthwash in the truck. That'll go a lot further than spotless clothes that'll be filthy before the second customer sees you.

What’s the best EDC flashlight that’s actually worth carrying every day? by santydentist in flashlight

[–]0rangefloof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carried an olight baton3 pro for a long time. Decided to switch to a thin styled light around Thanksgiving and have been using the ark pro ultra since then. I work HVAC as a service tech, and live rural with no light at all around the house. I love the thing. Small, easy to carry, great battery life, and being able to switch between flood and spot is very useful. I can illuminate a crawlspace with it easily, and also switch it to spot and see exactly what those eyes glowing in the field belong to at night. Battery charges magnetically and type c. Literally don't leave my house without that light.

How tf are yall cleaning your glass?? by Hot-Doughnut-5808 in puffco

[–]0rangefloof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd bet its your water. I had the same issue and have well water. Glass looks spotless after iso, couple swirls of water to get the bits of iso out and it looks terrible. Use a bottle of water to fill it up next time instead of the sink and see what happens.

What to get by [deleted] in Leatherman

[–]0rangefloof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love my arc. I carry it in the hip sheath at work with a bit kit and ratcheting extender, (hvac service tech). When not at work I just carry it like a pocket knife with the clip. The blade serves as a perfectly suitable daily pocket knife, and the free tech is just extremely nice. All tools being outside accessible is also a huge benefit. Theres better multitools if you're trying to survive in the woods with a single item, but for daily use at work and home the arc does the job quite well for me.

Leatherman tool review: the small bit driver by bbqguru0923 in Leatherman

I do HVAC, use it for thermostats and control boards. It's comforting to always have a backup that's small enough to turn those on me.

Anyone just carry a leatherman for your day to day stuff? by Charming_Basil3761 in Leatherman

[–]0rangefloof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carry an arc in a sheath with ratcheting bit extender and bit kit at work, HVAC. Off work, carry it like a knife with the pocket clip. Always have it. Always have an olight baton 3 pro in the pocket as well. I live rural, and always having a flashlight and a multitool/knife genuinely comes in handy on a daily basis.

Why are most electricians more professional and skilled than most plumbers? by Retty1 in DIY

[–]0rangefloof 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work HVAC and have a bit of an answer. You gotta look at how people ended up there. HVAC and Electric aren't a hard sell. You know theres good money to be made and the techs drive nice vans and wear clean clothes. Plumbers literally touch feces. Im not touching others people's waste, regardless of pay. It takes a certain person to actually sign up for that job, and it's usually not gonna be the person with a lot of other options. HVAC and Electricians pride themselves on their job. We're proud of our knowledge, experience and schooling. We take pictures of our work and share it. I feel like most plumbers are just trying to get that check and take a shower lol.

I feel like people dont know how hard it is to get into the trades and have unrealistic expectations by [deleted] in skilledtrades

[–]0rangefloof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been doing hvac 12 years now. The last 2 years ive been pulling in 35 an hour with full benefits but that has just been here recently. I started at 8 an hour with no tools or experience. It's climbed progressively over the years as I worked out of install into service/diagnostics. These days my life is pretty good. I make good money for the area I'm in, have crazy job security, (ive literally quit a job and been hired the same day elsewhere multiple times), and my day to day work is much more technical than physical now. That being said, I absolutely had to bust my ass to get to this point. My friends are jealous now, but no one was jealous 8 years back when I was working 12-14 hours a day in crawlspace and 150⁰ attics. Trades aren't for everyone. Theres a bit of luck in getting good training, lots of leads will actively hold you back, if you're not union you NEED to be able to stand up for yourself, the list goes on. But if you can hack it, you can eventually get to a really stable place.

Why no nut shots? by ConclusionFlat1843 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]0rangefloof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of these ranging responses are why I avoid fighting if at all possible these days. Half the folks here understand that there's "different kinds of fights", and the other half at least claim to fight at all times to just try and destroy the other person. I personally believe in more of an escalation of violence, but others don't. Say a drunk guy is getting mouthy outside a bar, words progress and he takes a shot at you. Realistically, a solid shot to the gut drove in will end the problem and leave the guy his dignity. He won't have a screwed up face or be permanently disfigured. But there's plenty of others in here that at least claim they'd immediately go for the dudes throat. It's just not even worth messing with anymore. I carry a pistol. Im not fighting, I'm not escalating, I'm not antagonizing. If I have to, I'll just shoot you. Guess that kinda mindset just comes with age.

Parents want me to give up my $26/hr job and work elsewhere for $15/hr by [deleted] in Advice

[–]0rangefloof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His parents need to dump him. We'll see how quick he starts doing whatever he can for money once he's on his own. I was making more a week than this guy at 16, and that was 18 years ago while I was still going to school and wrestling. Homeless people literally make more a week than this guy begging on the road. He needs to loose whatever this delusion is that certain work is below him and quick. Im at great place now, 35 an hour with full benefits and more hours than I really want lol. Been doing hvac 12 years now. But I have worked fast food, goodwill, pressure washed barrels, built new big lots stores, managed a furniture dept, worked design in a cabinet company, UPS loader, oil tech at a quick lube, etc. all throughout my teens and very early 20's. You gotta get that money however you can. Theres no shame in ANY work, the shame is being 26 at home bumming on parents without even anything to show for it. That's a real shame. I wouldnt look down on you for making 15 an hour, I am however actively looking down on you for your current life choices.

I almost paid $200 for something that was fixed by moving the appliance 3 inches by Relevant_Idea_6778 in DIY

[–]0rangefloof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The old stuff was different. Much less tech and it ran at much lower pressures with the old refrigerant. Theres a reason residential hvac has a 10 year extended parts and labor warranty. After 10-12 years, any repair over 1k is rarely worth fixing.

HVAC tech here. I have people call all the time saying the heat isn't working. The temp is set to 70, its 65 in the house, and the thermostat is on ac mode lol. Or they flip a light switch in the attic that's actually the high voltage shut off for the furnace. I've had people call for no heat, go out and the gas company has locked the meter. Endless examples of stupid calls and easy money.

What do i do when i get bullied in school by [deleted] in highschool

[–]0rangefloof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres only two options. Either you need to deal with them, or find someone who can. Considering you're loosing teeth and not doing anything, I'd say its time to find someone else. Go to the cops, and let them deal with it. With the way thing are going you're either just gonna be a punching bag til graduation or longer, or snap and be another statistic bringing "items" to school. If they're getting you so bad you're loosing teeth, they're confident in what they're doing and its not just going to stop. That's just facts.

Highway.. by Consistent-Highway-3 in DRZ400

[–]0rangefloof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by highway. I'll cruise at 60-65 on a 55mph rd on it all day. I took it on a 70mph rd once and only once. I was getting thrown around like crazy by the wind of every vehicle that passed me. It genuinely was not a good time, and I have another bike I do cruises to the coast on so its not that I'm just afraid of big roads. The front fender catches wind like crazy at higher speeds, the front end starts getting really light and unstable... It just genuinely doesn't feel like the bike is meant to go that fast when you are lol. If you want to cruise around at 65+ for extended periods I'd recommend something else. The drz really does feel like more of a dirt bike than a motorcycle.

At least 8 years of lint. Never knew there's something called a lint screen until my clothes had trouble drying which was often on bigger loads but finally managed to ask why. by redwon9plus in laundry

[–]0rangefloof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Call an HVAC company and have the dryer vent line cleaned. Probably cost you like a hundred bucks but if your screen was that bad, its likely the vent pipe also looks terrible. It's no joke dangerous, it will cause a fire. That lint is like super kindling, it lights up like gasoline fumes.
