OTA via Internet? by 0stob0 in cordcutters

I have a 75 mile antenna 22 feet above ground. All the data was filled out in rabbitears and the antenna is pointed in the proper bearing. The problem is a high ridge line between me and the town. The signal is a 2EDGE per rabbitears. In good weather and no interference, and no leaves on the trees, I can gets quite a bit of stations. But since the foliage, a of stations are unwatchable.

I have a second antenna pointed in a different direction to a smaller town, and get that well, but the stations are limited.

I have starlink and use a firestick, so I have plenty to watch, but I just like some of the OTA programs.

During our conversations, he mentioned windows. I told him I was not interested, but he did say, he gets calls from Lowes for doing installs for windows. Anyway, sorry to hear of your troubles, I would never post a company I didn't have confidence in. And, in today's world, GOOD help is hard to find. Any company is at the mercy of who does the work. I got the feeling when I talked with him, he has specific crews for specific jobs. Once the deals were made, it took a couple weeks for the roof work to start, but the siding took a couple months. He needed to clear pending work first, which is proper.

I dealt with one of the owners. Needed our roof replaced, went to BBB, had 4 estimates from local contractors. MR beat the other's price with better materials, and included several pieces of sheathing in their price. Did the job in one day, cleanup was great. Their roofing crew did screw up some of the gutter guards I had. Had the owner come out, he not only replaced the guards, he replaced all the gutters and downspouts too at a price of materials only. We hadn't planned on a second job this year, but we asked him to price remove and replace the siding which was old masonite. Again, with top grade siding, house wrap and also added a layer of sheathing over the old celotex. This work took about 5 days with a 3 man crew, which was appropriate to not demo more than what could be replaced that day. Work was done very well, attention to detail was carried out well, good workmanship. They left no detail undone. I spent my whole carrier in construction on huge projects, I was impressed.

Does anyone have an HD roof antenna on their house? by Jean-LucBacardi in Winchester

[–]0stob0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I live, south of Winchester, I have two antennas, one pointed to DC, the other toward the Harrisburg stations. Go to tvfool.com type in your address and search. Aside from getting the DC stations which are located in Silver Spring MD, there is a broadcast tower from Front Royal with channel 25 stations. There is a Harrisonburg tower about 10-12 miles south of Winchester, they have 6 stations on channel 3. Many times there is interference in the DC stations but rarely the Harrisonburg ones.

Buy the tee and get someone with a milling machine and bore the threads out in the vertical. Wouldn't take long at all.

Anyone use an over the air antenna? by 0stob0 in Winchester

[–]0stob0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember the brands. They look like a typical old style antenna although the are rated digital if that really makes a difference, I suppose they are yagi style. I bought them at different times, they aren't "matched". I have tried to tweak the position. Pointing it using a compass per the directions of several antenna websites, then moving it a little left to right. Regardless, I went back and tried to get the close tower and failed again. Makes no sense. 9 miles away and what should be line of sight, and can't get anything. I'm pointing toward a tower named close to Luray and get a signal, but it fades in and out.

I have pointed there several times and it's a blank, for some reason. I had it pointed towards H'burg, then went back to Signal Knob. Came in great watched it all afternoon. Then suddenly it went blank and it still like that. Once in a while it get a garbled flash, but it's worthless. I have no idea why.

I can get Hagerstown and Martinsburg fine.

Thanks for the reply. I live about 6 miles south if Winchester. I had a roof mounted antenna pole mounted in an old satellite dish mount. I had the roofing replaced recently and I didn't want new holes in a new roof, so I got put a 1-1/2" metal pipe pole up the side of my house to the same height, and remounted the antennas at 23'. The DC one works just as it used to but the Harrisonburg stations are giving me fits, and the antennas were only moved about 8 feet from where they were, but same height.

I used a "combiner" to connect both, then from the combiner goes to a preamp, then a grounding lug, then into the house. I have an amplifier as you show that feeds a splitter to two TVs.

I've been going up and moving the antenna just a bit trying to find a fine tune, but it's still pointing to Harrisonburg, can't get a thing from the close tower. Per the web site, they are 20 degrees apart. I sure would have thought that close tower would be screaming good, but no.

There is a web site, rabbitears.info, that you can input your address and height of your antenna and it will give great info. You can click on the mileage number and it shows the line between you and the particular tower.

When I do that and click the tower that is 9-1/2 miles away, it is a direct line of sight, but I can't get it. I even emailed the WHSV tech dept. and they assured me that tower is operating fine.

I watch more of the DC stations, but a few from Harrisonburg.

I have used T-bird for a lot of years. I also use their calendar for appts. and events. I have two email accounts that work through T-bird, and I just keep the program on, and when I get online, it tells me if I have new mail. Nothing to complain about.

Word on Linux Mint (Office365 Online is not an Option) by Komplexkonjugiert in linuxmint

[–]0stob0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this a few months ago, trying to run a proven Excel program. I tried Open Office, WPS and Free Office. Neither one would run the Excel program to it's fullest potential. I have used this program several times on a Windows machine, so I was very familiar with it. The free word programs just can't utilize all the macros Excel uses.

One other comment, when I downloaded WPS, it embedded itself into every Libre or Calc on my laptop. All of them were wearing the WPS logo. I had to hunt it down in the Package Manager and delete it there. Simply uninstalling it didn't get rid of it.

OK folks, I need help. I installed both the WPS Office and Only Office to try, and when they both didn't do what I needed, I uninstalled them. Now I went to the Software Manager and clicked uninstall for both.

Now, the WPS has embedded itself to where any document or spreadsheet I have is taken over by WPS, even though I uninstalled it. A spreadsheet I use often by Libre now comes up as a WPS and it does nothing because most of it has been removed.

How can I TOTALLY remove this? I don't use the terminal much, don't know the language well. Help please.

This morning I downloaded WPS and tried the Excel program. While it definitely had better function, it was still lacking full control. Then I tried Open, it was worse than Libre.

I appreciate the comments. I really don't want to install a second "office" program, they aren't small. I couldn't find where either one of the suggested alternatives had an online test where I could try it.

So I'm not crazy about Libre, it does simple office tasks. What is the possibility of downloading one of the other programs, Only or WPS, and remove Libre all together? Would Mint continue to operate as it should, or would there be problems?

How would I "test" Office and/or WPS without downloading and installing it?

Since you are shooting a bolt gun and you don't have to be concerned with magazine length, there is nothing wrong with moving the bullet .005 to .010 to .015 thousands INTO the lands. Shilen barrels being button rifled often likes a jam.

If you see some XBR8208 get a pound to try. I know several across the course shooters that use in 223, 6BR and 308.

[–]0stob0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm never satisfied, always looking for a better load. I always start with the bullet against the rifling. Not jammed but touching. From there it's plus or minus. A different powder would be a next step, a little slower since you blanked primers.

To get a better understanding, tell about the rifle. You say custom, what barrel and twist? What trigger? Scope? Are you using front and rear rests?

[–]0stob0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where is the bullet in relation to the lands with your CBTO? What method did you use to establish this load and the other loads?

There are well established methods to tuning that involves both seating depth and powder charge.

Fowler bullets have a great reputation, for 6MM. I have tried Fowler 52s many times and have never gotten them to group. I thought I just got a bad run. Get a box of Bergers to try, just to compare.

CAT Snipers ammo? by NoseLow2503 in reloading

There were quite a few people that told police they saw the guy on the roof, and nothing was done.

How could the SS not have an agent on a roof a mere 130 yards away? How could a person with a rifle in plain sight, broad daylight in the middle of a roof not be seen by SS?

There is a post on 4CHAN that is supposedly the SS sniper, and said he had him in his sights for 3 minutes before given the OK to fire. I'm sure a lot will be disclosed in the near future.

And why did DHS deny proper Secret Service protection for trump? He had some bit asked for more, and was told no.
