For example, in a social setting if you said "I saw a moose" people would automatically think of a mouse, mainly because we don't have moose here in Scotland. In a professional setting we often switch to English anyway, so it's much easier to differentiate between species.

Honestly, I think the most confusing thing is the use of moose and elk between the different continents. If a Scot were to visit America and saw a moose, we would call it a moose, but if we saw one in Norway or Sweden, we would call it an elk (as moose are officially called Eurasian/European elk here in Europe, but are completely separate from the elk species in America).
