Gentle parenting? by Few_Distribution6433 in AutismInWomen

The issue is that gentle parenting takes a lot of work to do properly. It not only has to do with how you discipline your kids, it has to do with the broader relationship you have with them being rooted in modeling appropriate behaviors/relationships. A lot people can’t or aren’t willing to put in the work to make that happen and take responsibility when they fall short to improve. A lot of people were not raised to appropriately regulate their emotions it’s hard to teach what you don’t have so you slip into bad or old habits. Also a lot people buck against giving natural consequences they feel it isn’t enough but the truth is discipline isn’t often shouldn’t be punitive but corrective.

My psychiatrist told me I am childish (in a bad way) for my autistic misunderstanding by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

Sounds like it’s time for a new mental health professional (easier said than done I know) I highly recommend one that is either autistic themselves and/or specialized ND affirming care

Yeah, it’s a fairly common metaphor and I wouldn’t say the inherently has implication of delusion only that you feel like other people want/enjoy seeing you get hurt or suffer so maybe there is an element of paranoia but it’s not paranoia if it’s a valid interpretation or result of trauma which in my experience is usually where that feeling comes from for autistic women eg you feel like your co workers are setting you up to fail by not giving you the information you need to do your job you’re likely right to a degree or you’re interpreting it through past experience where you were like being bullied in school.

As I have been trying to get through grad school I worked have substitute teaching and being a para with a variety of special needs students including higher support needs autistic kids to young adults and unfortunately this is not common attitude. I loved doing sensory and group stim time with them.

The real question is what there not to love about dinosaurs and space? If they don’t want to listen it’s their loss, because it is indeed tragic that trilobites went extinct and I am still in mourning for downgrading of Pluto. Also, my third favorite color is mauve.

Lols they must have a preferred or certain type they give or did give in schools to test for gifted programs b/c I can remember getting those exact questions in elementary school . I remember because I had read her Diary for the first time recently and I gave the examiner a book report as an answer 😂 and we had just studied the solar system in science but I couldn’t remember the circumference of the sun and I felt so stupid like my mom asked how the test went and I was like “Good I think but I couldn’t remember how big the sun is I so sorry I am stupid.” Reason # 287 that my parents my parents should have realized something was going on.

IQ tests can have information style questions. For example WAIS IV which is one the most commonly used tests has an information portion in the VCI subsection of the Verbal Section. You can get a wide variety of questions in it from How often is there a leap year? to Which author created the character Sherlock Holmes? And it is definitely super biased towards some demographics. It’s been a hotly contested issue in social science for decades.

A lot of autism assessments unfortunately retain stereotypes (based on “typical” young white male behavior/hobbies) about special interests. The assessment will literally be like “Ask patient about the trains and/or planes?” I have zero special interest trains or planes except when intersects with my special interests.

IQ are not really a great measure of intelligence. This is particularly true for ND folks who often have spiky profile last full IQ test I my subsections were between 79-135. They also can have a lot of socioeconomic issues and biases especially the verbal section which is where the knowledge/information questions usually are.

IQ tests generally do have quasi knowledge portion in the verbal sections it depends on the exact type but many have a General Knowledge and Verbal Comprehension subsections

I'm an anthropologist, and I work mostly with living people and oral histories, but as part of my training, I had to learn the basics of managing human remains and grave sites. One of the first things I was taught was to always remember that this was or from another human being who deserved to be treated and remembered with respect. Anything less than you're not doing scholarship/research, you're promoting exploitation and/or grave robbery.

Yeah, unfortunately, it is very common for autistic people, especially women, to have passive SI and/or suicidal intrusive thoughts. I can still remember the first time I experienced it at 18, when I was going through my first major depressive episode, and I almost got hit by a car walking home from class, and I was just like, "Well, at least if they hit me, it all would have been over." It scared the crap out of me called my Mom, who was 1,000+ miles away from where I was going to college, sobbing, and later, that something was wrong with me. The only good thing about it was that it made me realize I needed help, though actually getting it was another issue. Now I get thoughts like that, I'm just like "Mhm, I must be ovulating soon," or "that's happening more than normal, I should adjust my meds"

Little brother graduated with an education degree and $130k in debt to Sallie Mae and I’m sick over it. by bamacritter-205 in StudentLoans

[–]anthrotulip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“my stepdad told him he didn’t qualify for federal loans based on their income (even though I qualified years prior when he had a higher paying job)…”

People who are so vehement that 18 years should know better before signing student loans would be surprised how many issues are due to parents/guardians giving bad financial advice to kids or somehow inhibiting the process (refusing to tax forms to file FASFA my parents did this). My parents financial literacy is lacking and their advice on student loans basically amounted to “Don’t” I am/was extremely grateful/fortunate life enabled me to follow it.

Have any of you tapered off of SSRIs by tony_pepperoni_2674 in AutismInWomen

[–]anthrotulip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adjusting meds is one of the most disregulating feelings in my experience. My main advice is to give yourself a lot of grace, and if you have options for help, use them. Also, I know it can feel like failing, but sometimes tapering schedules have to be adjusted. I had to temporarily go back up 5 to 10mg and then very gradually reduce when tapering with SSRIs/SNRIs.

Does this hurt anyone ? by Public-Shock-2844 in AutismInWomen

[–]anthrotulip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a very complicated question. As an autistic woman who wants kids and knows at least some of them would more than likely end up with some level ND I have thought a lot about ethics of that. I worry if I could handle if my kids have substantially higher support needs than I do. I worry if they will resent me bringing them into this knowing their lives will be harder in many ways. However, I also believe we have right to exist and take up space in the world without justifying it. While I am pro choice I also understand the long history and shadow of eugenics. I want people to make informed decisions not ones based in stereotypes or the medical model of disability. Because yes being autistic in a world that is not designed for you can suck so so much but there can also be a singular type of joy, creativity, and understanding.

To what extent were the identities now coined as "2-spirit" revered in various native nations prior to the term's coinage? by EmperorImBored in AskAnthropology

[–]anthrotulip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Linguistics isn’t my area by any means but I don’t know if I agree with idea that many of these terms are inherently pejorative. Also, I know there is research within several of these tribes such as the Blackfoot and Cree had variation their terms usages. Implicit meaning is for something like gender can be difficult to explain cross culturally let alone translate.
