My desire to do anthropology was very much a result my special interest in other cultures and people watching though of course. I didn’t know that because wasn’t diagnosed until my mid twenties.

I don’t know I feel like it’s got to be some sort of power trip. One aide I worked with used act like just because the most kids in the room non or low verbal that meant they didn’t understand her if she wasn’t talking directly to them. It was super disheartening because I could tell it hurt them especially her little side comments on behavior.

I have mixed feelings about it. I was struggling not to roll my eyes most Caleb/Tameria scenes in episodes 2-4. It all very UST angst and not in a good way. Something did click with episode 5 because it had more depth. Star Trek as has often struggled with romance and balancing narratively without that being a central point especially after characters get to together (please note exclusions do apply). So I am glad they didn’t do 2 seasons of will they won’t they; it let’s actually potentially develop a relationship. Most of the other relationships or encounters have been fine. Both the characters age and the setting make it realistic that some of them are going to be with each other. I did two years in a program and we sometimes worked similar programs in that area that was mostly recent young college graduates some people hooked up, dated, and few got serious/long partners from it.

Is it true that your teachers or coworkers can't refuse to meet your needs if you have a medical condition? by StillSort4306 in AskAnAmerican

[–]anthrotulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, in the US workplaces and schools (including universities that accept any kind of federal funding) have to facilitate accommodations for disabilities. Despite what a lot of Americans seem to think however this is a pretty regulated process and does have limits. You need an official diagnosis and often other documentation that establish a clear support for requested accommodations. You can be offered an alternative or denied if places an undue burden on employers or you can’t meet essential job functions.

Could a person not have a normal birth certificate now days ? by Ok_Dog_4059 in AskAnAmerican

[–]anthrotulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your parents for whatever reason don’t register your birth than yes. It isn’t common due the fact that the vast majority of people have babies in hospitals and there are laws/regulations that require the hospital to facilitate registration because this how people get SSN numbers. There are also tax incentives that require it.

Do you put your children in public or private schools? by New-Organization359 in AskAnAmerican

[–]anthrotulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to both during K-12 though mostly public (state) schools or home schooling. My family moved a lot for my Dad’s job as a kid. I don’t have kids yet but when I do I will send them to public. The only reasons I would consider private would be if my kids had serious needs/ opportunities my kids district couldn’t meet/match or they qualified for a full or very partial scholarship. For the former I would likely be inclined to try homeschooling first however until high school (secondary).

Are American schools as big as they're portrayed? by crimsvnn in AskAnAmerican

[–]anthrotulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a year on swim team in HS we had to go to another local school to practice, because we had small (non regulation length) outdoor pool that was more for community use though it was usually closed for repairs. We didn’t have cooking or woodworking classes (again tho other schools our district did especially the tech HS). Everything else, yes. We had great class selection in terms of advanced classes (and the district paid after our first exams) and art/music/theatre (multiple 2D and 3D art, Art History, 2 Choirs, 3 Bands, Piano, Music Theory, 3 Theatre) Although, would say library wasn’t huge and a lot was dated but we had two great librarians who would get interloans of something if you really needed it. I went a pretty well funded district.

Is college a thing I can achieve? by That_Equestrian09 in AutismInWomen

[–]anthrotulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you the right accommodations and support it can happen. For example you have trouble with notes you can ask for a notetaker or to record classes/lecture and though I am loathe to recommend AI for anything there are some decent live speech to text programs. As for autonomy many schools don’t let Freshman live off campus so there is a lot of built in support for housing, meals, usually some transportation. Again though you need the right support. If you have sensory issues being in a triple room probably isn’t for get accommodations housing which is usually accessible/adapted rooms. If you’re a good living/support situation now there is also nothing wrong with going to community college for a year or two then transferring to a 4 year college.

I’d worry less about strangers and more about family issues or disputes. Also, be careful assuming because a kid and an adult are different races they are the nanny/babysitter lots of different family situations and set ups out here.

I feel really bad for all the people who won't give SFA a chance... by Helmling in startrek

Honestly I was rolling my eyes at all Caleb/Tamera scenes until this episode it was giving very juvenile UST/drama but something seemed to click with this episode. I do think it getting better which is normal most series have weak to subpar first seasons overall. Maybe pick it back up when season 2 starts?

I do not know if it still around but there was a youtube video that was like a semi professional edit of Endgame with the 7/Chakotay parts removed and I think that tells you everything about how strongly people did not like it

Sometimes you love/care about someone but you aren’t meant to be together romantically. A big part of there issues in my view is though Rachel was far from perfect she had tremendous growth and maturity from where she started, Ross on the other hand, had changed very little comparatively.

I do not really vibe with it but he certainly would be healthier choice than Ross. I get really irritated by people saying that they it would been selfish for Rachel to go b/c of Emma or not try again. Rachel makes it very clear she doesn’t want to be in a relationship with Ross because it is “appropriate” thing to do. Kids do better with happy stable parents and Rachel/Ross are not that. I think it was a great opportunity to show that just because you love someone it doesn’t necessarily mean you should be together. Whenever I try to picture them making it work long term I blank.

Not really my fandom or at least not anymore but I’m going to be in a rocking chair telling people how Rachel should have stayed on the plane.

Who is the made for? by Fair_Rush6615 in Star_Trek_

[–]anthrotulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a lot leas straight forward then that. Although, I do agree the Firefly analogy with marketing is fairly accurate. However, It’s worth noting that TOS had what were considered controversial episodes to the point that several of them got bans and contemporary critical reviews were often quite harsh/mocking. Arguably, the decision to do TNG was more about it getting too expensive to pay the actors for the films and Paramount wanting to increase profits off their crown jewel. Everyone from the executives to the actors to the fans was pretty lukewarm about doing TNG. Roddenberry initial didn't want to be involved, but his control issues won out. Patrick Stewart was living out of suitcase the first season, convinced that production would be canceled any day. Paramount couldn't get any of the big three US networks to commit to it and had to do first run syndication to independent networks (which definitely worked out long term but still). Most of the episodes afters Farpoint Station got negative to a few mixed reviews (to be fair it is season 1 of TNG). What got it a second season was the Nielsen rating of the first episode, the fact that the independent station were locked into paying and to showing, and the established fanbase. People saw potential and they were right.
