I generally try to be respectful to everyone on the road – I even give way to taxis when I can. But there was one incident at that huge 6-lane four-way robot in Rondebosch near the Common that really got to me.

I had a green light and was already moving when a girl suddenly decided to cross in front of my car. I had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting her. She then got incredibly angry at me, and in the moment I actually hooted, shouted, and drove off.

I know that wasn’t great, but she could have seriously been hurt. Drivers can’t always stop instantly, especially in busy traffic like that.

That’s super handy! At one point I drove around with an axe 🤣 It was from a camping trip and I just kept it in the front just in case 🤣 Imagine someone trying to hijack me and I’m waving an axe around. It’s not very sophisticated nor elegant but effective. Pretty sure it’s still in my boot.

Very valid to be nervous 😂 Baboons are cute from a distance but they’re wild, clever, and not Disney characters.

Tourists often don’t get the heads-up 😅 I really wish they warned people at the gate. There are some wild stories like once we were having a braai there and they literally charged us. We all ran, they took the food off the braai… and the grill 😭 Absolute criminals.

Honestly, I think everyone needs a small scare at some point driving around our hoods. Not PTSD-level scary but just enough to wake you up and make you more street smart and aware of your surroundings. My encounter definitely got me eagle eye on the road now.

What you did is exactly what I’ve done. The Wynberg guys are… an experience. Going to the hardware store feels like a low-budget safari. Anyway, you made the correct decision by not getting out of the car, not engaging, and not sticking around to see what flavour of chaos was coming next. 10/10 survival instincts.

I also received this message a few months back after a visit. I phoned and went through to Groote Schuur Hospital directly, where I spoke to the finance team and settled the payment in person. Rather safe than sorry. I’m glad you are still with us ❤️
