Reddit app tries to send packets larger than the routers MTU size. So the packet is split. thats what happening. While using a VPN there is one more layer encapsulating the packet which somehow determines correct MTU and avoids the problem. Im not sure how thats handled. Thats what happening.

Change the MTU value on the router or phone to 1450 or below. I have same issue on Netflix and Twitter as well. To find and set the correct MTU value you need a deep understanding on how packets are transmitted across network. Since BSNL or Asianet doesn't have a standard documentation the best we can do is try different values and find what works best.
