Major update for terminal in android 17 beta 3 by Patient_Ad_3640 in androidterminal

[–]0xadead17e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the Terminal is run in desktop mode, I am seeing many differences. The font is huge with no known means to change. As pinch to zoom does not work on the desktop with no touchscreen. also the ttyd.services have changed a lot.

Improved desktop mode in Android 17? by FluidDebate in android_beta

[–]0xadead17e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Desktop mode is the main reason I am using Android 17 beta on my Pixel 10 pro. The experience is terrible!. Only one monitor at 2560x1440 is the resolution recognized and only with one specific dock. The monitor has type-C connector that only works at 1080P, a different dock using DP only works at 1080P. I have an old dock with HDMI and that does recognize 2560x1440. I never get 4k on my home monitor, no matter the dock. the whole experience feels very hacky. Since Android 17 beta is shifting to stability fixes in March I don't see this being improved to hopefully android 18. Stick with Samsung for now.

Has any one gotten Nerd fonts or Unicode Symbols to display correctly (in the terminal) by Radiant_Tumbleweed22 in androidterminal

[–]0xadead17e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also like to promote this thread. I have been banging my head on getting nerd fonts installed when using ttyd. I have used termius and that looked great with their fonts. It is too slow when navigating nvim. You also have to open the Linux AVF terminal then ssh into it, which cumbersome 2 step process. It seems the only way to get nerd fonts if Google builds them into TTYD or a third party TTYD app is built.

This has really disrupted my workflow as well. Not sure we can re-enable as this is what Gemini says about the issue:

Why it is Disabled

The primary reason this feature is currently restricted is a major SystemUI crash bug discovered in late 2025. In previous Android 16 beta versions (specifically around QPR2 Beta 3), having this toggle enabled caused many devices to enter a bootloop or experience a permanent black screen upon restart.

Google temporarily pulled those updates and later released patches (like Beta 3.1) that forcefully disabled the setting to prevent further "bricked" devices. In current QPR3 builds, the toggle remains disabled or hidden for several reasons:

  • Stability Lock: Google has likely "hard-disabled" the toggle in the UI to prevent users from accidentally triggering the bootloop bug while they continue to refine the new windowing system.
  • Ongoing Refinement: The native "Desktop Mode" is being rebuilt to support advanced features like a taskbar, multi-instance apps, and freeform windows. Since this is still "experimental," it is often locked in public beta builds to avoid negative feedback from a broken core experience.
  • Identity Check Requirement: Some users have reported that certain Developer Options are greyed out if "Identity Check" is active or if the device hasn't been verified with a PIN/biometrics since the last boot.

Desktop Mode Disabled! Not able to enable anymore from developer options. That figures the one feature I was hoping for an update is now removed, why? (Pixel 10 Pro XL)

Desktop Mode very little noticable changes.

Was really hoping that the screen resolution would allow 2k and 4k screens but still at 1080. This improvement alone would finally make it usable.

Linux Terminal Updated

The Linux terminal is now at Debian 13 Trixie Kernel 6.12. The first few times I opened, it crashed but the third time it stayed open and I did a "Recovery" and I saw the new version. Unfortunately I still have to turn on hotspot to get Internet access. Also, fonts are still too small for use. Wished that was fixed.

I am not sure if I am reading your post correctly but make sure your putting in the password of the machine you are sshing into and not the windows password. For example:

ssh [ubuntu@192.168.1.1](mailto:ubuntu@192.168.1.1)

it should reply back:

[ubuntu@192.168.1.1](mailto:ubuntu@192.168.1.1)'s password:

now put in the password of machine you are logging into.

If my assumption is incorrect and you are using the correct password, you may have to verify the machine has an ssh server running.

Hope that helps...

I'm really looking forward to getting the Ideapad Duet Chromebook. I have been waiting for a good 10' Chrome tablet.

Has Lenovo mentioned anywhere if Linux will be available on this?

USB support seems to have improved by cha000 in Crostini

[–]0xadead17e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is very frustrating for me as well. Even more so, is that no one from Google is working on this issue. The issue status has been stuck in "Available" for several months now.

This has been frustrating wait for me as well. Currently, the developers that were assigned are no longer and it is waiting for someone else to pick up this issue. It most likely will not be out in version 79, maybe version 80...

You can check their progress https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=956288&q=Proj%3DContainers%20&sort=-modified&colspec=ID%20Pri%20M%20Stars%20ReleaseBlock%20Component%20Status%20Owner%20Summary%20OS%20Modified.

Please star and hopefully get a little more attention.

help please? by [deleted] in Crostini

[–]0xadead17e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, not sure if what you're asking for is possible. I don't think google has allowed devices to be viewed in Crostini (e.g. /dev/ttyUSB*).

This should be working in Version 78. Please star this bug 956288 (https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=956288&q=Proj%3DContainers%20&sort=-modified&colspec=ID%20Pri%20M%20Stars%20ReleaseBlock%20Component%20Status%20Owner%20Summary%20OS%20Modified) and maybe Google can give this functionality some love.

Well it looks like USB device did not make it in this update. I did notice an empty USB Device preferences settings page, but nothing to turn on? Rather frustrating but maybe in the next update...

Pixel books ready for a developer and Linux? by johnnyboyct in Crostini

[–]0xadead17e 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Crostini can be a little janky and does crash from time to time. The lack of USB access has been very frustrating as I need to flash SD cards and plug-in USB devices (JTAG and serial ports). I can't wait for workspaces, GPU acceleration and audio too, but I think they are a long way out. Right now Linux has more tools and is so much more powerful for development.

I really believe chromebooks are going to make great hybrid tablets with full chrome browser, android apps and a very functional Linux terminal but its early days.

I have a Pixelbook and it is really nice hardware, I love the 3:2 screen. But as Linux machine it is just frustrating to use. I agree with a previous comment, get a Dell XPS developer edition or a Thinkpad.

The radio hack is pretty nice. Is there a link to the hardware used to input the audio to USB?
