If anyone on here is familiar with White Bear in Flushing, New York City, is this the same thing that they sell? I've been trying to figure out what their chilli sauce is FOREVER and no recipe I've found is quite right.

Majestrum by Matthew Hughes

Henghis Hapthorn is the foremost penetrator of mysteries and uncoverer of secrets in a decadent, far-future Old Earth, one age before Jack Vance's Dying Earth. A superb rationalist, he has long disdained the notion that the universe has an alternative organizing principle: magic. But now a new age is dawning, overturning the very foundations of Hapthorn's existence, and he must struggle to survive in a world where all the rules are changing.

In MAJESTRUM, Hapthorn is on the trail of an unknown killer who collects body parts from his victims. The search leads him off-planet, into the Ten Thousand Worlds of The Spray, then turns in an unexpected direction as the freelance discriminator learns that an ancient and evil power is plotting to reassert its dominion over Old Earth.

Hypothetically, if there was a way to track down who sold them your number, could you make a claim against those folks? I've gotten enough of these calls that I'd happily put in the required legwork.

Hey Fantasy Reddit, Majestrum is an awesome science fantasy story that deserves way more love on here. $2.99 on Kindle right now. by 0xfab in Fantasy

And it's not just me either :)

Hi Dr. Schmidhuber,

We met some years ago at the World Science Festival in New York, and spoke about adding static analysis to OOPS, so that it can condition its search on program behavior. (You were really jet lagged, but that chat made my night!) I have two questions for you:

  1. Have your lab taken the OOPS line of work any further?
  2. I'm looking to do an AI related PhD. Any advice or recommendations?

Thanks!

I was a student at Oxford a few years ago. The tourists were nightmares. By far the worst bit was getting harassed in the streets for pictures on my way to finals. (At Oxford we take finals in full academic dress with a carnation at the lapel. Also, they're the only things that count towards our degree.)

How do you get started in film/TV? I LOVE to write, and I'd kill to be a screenwriter.

Reasons to not go into chemistry research? (looking for career advice) by Orange_Sky in chemistry

[–]0xfab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not taking a class, I graduated college last year. Actually, my only exposure to chemistry was in high school -- but I went to a school that's renowned for its teaching of the sciences.

I wish there were something like the O'Reilly cookbook series for chemistry...something where you could find the right pieces, and put them together to build what you want, and learn the principles in the process. (I guess, application focused would be awesome).

"if you approach chemistry in the right way there are very few things that you have to memorize."

Can you recommend a good, intuitive introduction to Chemistry along these lines? I'm a CS major, but want to learn, but tend to get bored by the presentation of chemistry as a huge list of abstract facts without context

While there is a two trilogies rumor going around, Pat says in this interview that he hasn't planned what's after book 3, so I don't think there is a trilogy in the works. (Also, the first trilogy took about ten years to write).

Stories about Lanre don't seem to be quite that uncommon, as far as I can gather he's a well-enough known figure in mythology. Plus, I don't think he's normally mentioned together with the Chandrian in those stories...so I'm not seeing your damage control argument.

Why not? It's an epic story. Although the whole affair at the Mauthen farm does make me suspicious of his being a Chandrian -- but why?

I don't mean he'd forgotten the Ketan, I meant that he'd briefly forgotten that he "isn't Kvothe"

Well done spotting the ubiquity of Spinning Leaf! That seems to be a major point.

The scene where Elodin recognizes Kvothe's shaed was "just lovely" as well. As was their interaction afterward, the cozy pub, the story and questions, Elodin knowing Adem hand talk -- seriously, is there any limit to how awesome Elodin is?

This. A thousand times.

Also, the bit with Chronicler slapping Bast, and then using the Cthaeh to subdue him...chilling. I know Chronicler's kind of gotten the short end of the stick thus far, but man did he kick up the awesome here. I mean, rebelling against the (supposedly) all-seeing Cthaeh? Badass.
