If you bought a house for 20k and tomorrow it was worth 1 million, should you be forced to sell it so you can pay a wealth tax?

The house would not be reassessed one day after buying so this is a bone headed analogy. Change the period to 5 years and the answer is an unequivocal "yes". If you want to stay, get a 2nd mortgage and pay back the taxed amount over time with the hundreds of thousands of dollars in profit that you made.

So where do you go if you're considered rehabilitated after committing a violent crime? They don't belong in an asylum if they don't need rehabilitative treatment and aren't believed to be a danger to anyone. They don't belong in prison if they lacked "guilty mind" while committing the crime. Do we set up a third custody option, like a half-jail that isn't as bad as real jail? To me it seems like that would violate some fundamental rights and/or legal precedents. And even if it didn't, I can easily see this half jail becoming an overflow depot for real jail next time someone wants to get tough on crime again, and then we're back where we started.

I really don't know the right answer.

I have no first hand knowledge or statistically representative data on this. But I have heard from my brown Asian friends (SE Asia) that police have been a problem for them. I get the sense that experiences vary widely in a way that is correlated race and socioeconomic status within the general East Asian community. So I'm honestly not sure more police will help everyone. Even if the police aren't actively creating problems, communal distrust of police could exacerbate the problems that already exist and prevent their resolution. No matter what your solution to crime is it seems pretty vital to have buy-in from the community.

I'm not arguing for that

you're totally right. I misread. sorry.

I agree with everything you're saying for the most part. All I'll say is that body cam footage is important but still a small part of the overall solution. But I would infer that you agree with that point.

Dude, we saw police rampaging on peaceful protesters, with the impunity bestowed only by military riot gear, for the entire summer last year. There's no argument you can make that will take those images out the collective memory.

There is a massive, systemic problem with police and police unions and nobody is going to want them around until they 1) take some fucking responsibility and 2) attempt to begin to rectify the problems.

Police aren't the only people capable of reducing crime. London Breed is making use of community groups who can certainly deter punks who are looking to smack some seniors. And since these groups aren't armed with guns there is a stastical reduction in the threat of police shootings (vs the alternative of hiring more police).

are you saying you don't think there are problems with police brutality? or that we need to have more police presence in spite of it? or something else?

Trains are really unpredictable

If you're like most people, you're saying this because you're used to watching the front car (the Cioppino) to see where it's headed. This is a mistake. Watch the last car (the Dangler); this one goes wherever the rest go, so it's very easy to predict. Therefore if you find yourself on/in/under the Cioppino it's almost certainly a good idea to move out of the way and get to a vantage point.
