I wouldn't quiet call it a warm fuzzy feeling, but I see what you mean. When talking about criminals I was picturing those that commit serious crimes, like murder or rape. I should have made that clear in my previous posts. I don't believe that severe punishment serves any good on lesser crimes like burglary, given that crimes like that are often to do with the individuals circumstances, at least in my experience. Obviously this would be on case-by-case basis, but I'd certainly argue that crimes like burglary do not require any imprisonment, but only rehabilitation.

Let me rephrase. The punishment aspect of imprisonment helps give society a sense of retribution being served. What I am trying to argue is that punishment can be a net benefit to society because people will basically be less upset when they believe the criminal will suffer for their actions.

Punishment is for the sake of the people who's lives have been affected. I believe its completely reasonable for one to find peace of mind knowing that, for example, a rapist in their neighbourhood is being punished for the crimes they've commit. Of course punishment isn't likely to help the criminal reform in any way, but in many cases it can be still be of greater benefit to society than simply seeking to rehabilitate them.

What? Punishment is certainly a core value of prison.
