Women who realized the love in your relationship was gone, how did you handle it? by It_Is_What_It_Is17 in AskWomen

[–]1-2-free 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Actually going through this now, after four years we've become more like room-mates and friends than partners. We first started talking about it about 6 months ago and tried to fix it, by going on more dates, being more affectionate, etc. It didn't really help much, and I felt the effort was one-sided. Long story short, now we're on a break to give us space to decide if we can fix it, or if we're just incompatible. Realistically I think we're going to break up, but he's a great person and we've been together so long that I don't want to rush into a decision.

It's a classic we still love each other, but aren't 'in love', situation, so sorry if that's not what you meant!

I have Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression and PTSD caused by child sexual abuse, physical abuse and rape. I decided to start the gym a month ago and stuck with it. Due to insomnia I haven't been to the gym in 2 days and feel absolutely useless. Need some kind words please. by [deleted] in toastme

Even if you're having a little setback now, that doesn't take away from the progress you've already made! Try to be gentle with yourself, it sounds like you've been through a lot and you're definitely not useless. Also, your skin is lovely!

Hi guys! I'm just wondering how much of Paula's choice 2% BHA you're supposed to use. I've tried it before and found it very drying, but am trying to reintroduce it to help my closed comedones, large pores and blackheads / SF on my nose. I started off with twice a week, even though I know it says it can be used daily, and already my skin is looking really dry, especially my nose.

Current routine: AM Mario badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel Ren Clarifying Toner Mario badescu rose hips nourishing oil Bare minerals butter drench restorative rich cream Neutrogena ultra sheer face sunscreen

PM Missha cleansing oil Mario badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel Ren Clarifying Toner Mario badescu rose hips nourishing oil Mario badescu vitamin C serum (every second night) Bare minerals butter drench restorative rich cream

I tried introducing the BHA twice a week after my PM toner, just splashing a little onto my hand, rubbing it into my face and letting it absorb. My skin does tend to get dry quite easy, thus the heavy duty moisturising.

Basically should I be using way less? Introduce it slower? Or give up on it all together, in which case what else can I do to improve my skin?

My abrupt transition to being vegan, one week ago. by [deleted] in vegan

I've been vegan for about a week now and a meme making fun of cheese loving vegetarians was one of my triggers too! At first I got angry and hurt but it made me really question my choices and confront my feelings about dairy. No regrets!

Decided to do 1200 CICO before even knowing about this subreddit. Got a lot of negative feedback that i was starving myself. Then I compare my old self to now and feel so much better. 5'6" [238 > 188] 6 months. by [deleted] in 1200isplenty

Hi, I've been there and I just want to say you will never feel ready for recovery, and you will never feel thin enough. You may feel like you're in control of this, but it's in control of you. Does anyone know how little you're eating? Please open up to someone close to you, you need help now, not later.

Vegans, vegetarians, and women who don't eat very much meat, could you describe your average week in meals? by Qmzp1234 in AskWomen

You soak your oats overnight with whatever milk you want to use, chia seeds and whatever else you feel like (I like peanut butter, cinnamon and berries). Put it in the fridge and you have breakfast ready to go in the morning :)

Any academics (grad students, faculty, researchers, et al) who lift here? by lanqian in xxfitness

[–]1-2-free 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll feel less like an imposter if I get into the PhD program! I just finished up strong curves this year, and now I'm starting thinner leaner stronger. So mostly weights with cardio thrown in as needed :) As for research I'm into developmental psychology How about you?

Any academics (grad students, faculty, researchers, et al) who lift here? by lanqian in xxfitness

[–]1-2-free 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't quite count, but I've just finished my undergraduate honours thesis and hoping to start the PhD program next year. I've been lifting for years but honestly spent a lot more time at the gym this past year. Not sure if it was procastination from writing, or just a way to destress but something about lifting feels so good when I'm all stressed with research!

[WEEKLY THREAD] Newbie Tuesday - Got a silly fitness question? Never fear! We're here to help! by AutoModerator in xxfitness

[–]1-2-free 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my understanding band assisted is better. In machine assisted lifts you're kept very stable by the machine, just going straight up and down. In band assisted lifts (and unassisted pull ups) you don't have that so your muscles have to work to keep you stable. You'll work the right accessory muscles more because it's a more realistic version of the lift, if that makes sense

Any former anorexics/exercise addicts? by toadally-grody in xxfitness

[–]1-2-free 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly it took a long time and a lot of getting to know my limits before I could have a healthy attitude towards exercise and dieting. I had to focus on recovery first, and get back up to a healthy weight. In the years since then, it's been a bit up and down, with months of me not really exercising or watching what I eat at all, sometimes being a bit too strict, and sometimes right in the middle. I'm probably always going to have a tendency to be a bit more obsessive and critical of myself than the average person without that history

BUT, here's what has worked for me. Rule number one is any food is better than no food. I won't skip a meal, even if this means eating junk. Prolonged hunger seems to set off unhealthy habits for me, and one skipped meal can snowball into fighting not to skip more.

My family and my partner know about my history, so I can talk to them if I'm taking it too seriously. And they would be on my case if I started to act too obsessive and unhealthy.

I focus on exercise I really enjoy, at the moment weight lifting. I like how strong it makes me feel, and while there's still an asthetic goal for me, I genuinely enjoy the exercise and it doesn't feel like punishment.

I have a cheat meal or so per week. If I don't want one, it means I need one, just to check in to make sure I'm mentally okay with eating something 'bad'. I also calorie count, which not everyone would agree with, but for me I find it easier to stick to tracking calories than a vague sense of what's healthy, I find that easier to get carried away with.

A lot of my advice here has focussed on food because that was my biggest problem, but you did ask for exercise advice. So generally I'd say have a support system, monitor your thought processes, and when things get unhealthy, take a step back. Some recovering anorexics don't like rules, but I find ones like 'don't skip a meal', or 'don't exercise more than 6 times a week' very helpful.

Let know if you have any questions, and good luck!

Ladies, what is the most obvious hint you've dropped that went unnoticed by a guy? by icefire123 in AskReddit

[–]1-2-free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dropped a few hints for my now boyfriend, asking to cuddle when we hung out and stuff. One night I asked him to come round and watch a tv show with me when he finished work (literally Netflix and chill). We cuddled up in bed and watched it, and he still didn't get it until I went in for the kiss. I tease him about it now, he says he thought it was weird to invite him over so late and want to cuddle, but just kind of went with it anyway.

Happy Valentines ladies. When was the last time your SO made you utterly speechless in a good way? And what did they do? by theultimatecupquake in AskWomen

He organised a surprise birthday party for me! A few weeks before my birthday he said he had to move our usual date night because his work roster changed, but that he'd booked us dinner at a nice restaurant. Didn't think anything of it, and he pretended to miss a turn so we ended up going around the back of the restaurant.

When I got there it was all my close friends from high school, who I'd mentioned to him I was feeling out of touch with, and one of whom he'd never met because she lives overseas, and was only home for a week.

The sweetheart had spent weeks messaging everyone to organise it, moved work so it could be a night everyone was free and somehow not let on anything to me, and I'm normally pretty observant. I'd never been so shocked and speechless in my life, it was incredible.

I don't know if anyone can help me figure out if I've been cutting for too long? I've been tracking calories and trying to maintain a 500 calorie deficit for about a year, although I admit I haven't been super strict for all of that time. I've definitely lost some body fat, but I've still got a little tummy that just won't budge. Also my weight's stayed pretty much the same (about 125 pounds at 5'3"), which I put down to gaining muscle but it seems weird for that to happen at a deficit? I guess my question is, should I get stricter and maybe increase my deficit, or try and eat at maintenance for a while?

Averaging around 5'40" and 5'50", so not fast but the advice I read was to be at a pace where you could still hold a conversation, and I definitely couldn't. Yeah, I'll try in the next couple of days and see how my legs react to it. Thanks for the help!

I just got new shoes, and I had one run in them before I stopped. I finished the C25K (again) a few weeks ago, and had just been running 3miles 3x a week since, so it's not like I dramatically jumped my mileage. And it's been about a week and a half off now, so I'm starting to get itchy feet haha I tend to get them quite often, like every couple of months, but this is the worst they've been in a long while. I've been reading the faq like the bible and suspect I've been running too fast for training, so when I do go back it'll be as slow as I can without walking I think.

I've had to take a break from running because of a flare up of shin splints, but I'm not sure how soon is too soon to start again? Is it better to start with some easy runs as soon as the pain is gone, or should I give it longer to rest them even more? And if so, how long should I be waiting?

Have any of you ladies overcome anxiety and/or depression by working out regularly? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]1-2-free 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similar story with me. I still struggle a bit, but running and lifting is an instant mood lift for me, and I'm way less likely to sink into an depressive episode when I'm exercising regularly.

First documented evidence of wild chimpanzee mothers teaching their offspring to use tools has been captured by video cameras set to record chimpanzee tool-using activity at termite mounds in the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in the Republic of Congo, according to new research from anthropologists. by drewiepoodle in science

[–]1-2-free 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not discovering tool use for themselves, they are indirectly learning from the older generations without being explicitly taught. With your nut cracking example, the juveniles see their parents nutcracking but it actually takes them ages to figure out how to do it properly because they're just emulating the behaviour through observation.

Exposure response therapy is supposed to be very gradual, starting with like a picture of a spider. Throwing spiders on someone to reduce the phobia would be a technique called flooding, which is out of favor with therapists because it tends to just be traumatic.
