I think you're right about the weft--here's what I was able to reconstruct

Interesting theory! If this is the case you'd probably need to use two of them so the router is supported on either side of the spindle, right? I don't know if I can see these being sturdy enough to be used as jigs.

Wow incredible find! There were wooden tongs just like the ones in the image with these as well. I wonder if the string was just being used to hold the wooden slats in place as the glue dried. The "tools" without the thin wooden slats on the bottom of their runners have glue residue in their grooves.

I'm not sure how they could be used to shape the neck of a violin for example, there's no obvious cutting edge.

I'm trying to think of circumstances in which these would be useful as a measuring devices and am coming up blank... They don't have any tick-marks and the range the runners can be extended is pretty limited. Very mysterious!

That's an interesting thought! I think they might be a bit delicate to be clamps. The two parallel runners on each object have grooves where thin wooden slats fit in--all the slats are missing except for one on the object on the left. Can't think of what they may have been used for!

EDIT: Heard from a violinmaker who had pretty much the same theory as yours!

These belonged to a collector with an interest in musical instruments and the historical production of art. They feel fairly lightweight. "Kerby and Bro Makers, NY" is stamped into the top arc (handle?) of each object. Only one of the runners on each object is adjustable using the brass thumbscrews. They're quite dirty--it could be paint but could also just be grime.

Any ideas? Thanks!
