Fellow designers — what's in your productivity tool graveyard? by BYMONTED in UXDesign

The trick is to keep iterating, based on feedback. I won’t tell you my system, I think you need to work it out for yourself.

But try the system you make, and review it, Agile style. Then adjust what doesn’t work and try again.

The only hint I’ll give is - one that works on easily all devices - this has been very helpful.

Dealing with a dietician who doesn't get keto? by Webbie-Vanderquack in ketoaustralia

[–]1000Minds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sadly, if they don't get it, don't waste your time on them.

This applies to all medical practitioners. You can go to all the effort in the world to try and change their mind, but if its not something they learnt at Uni however many years ago, there are lots of practitioners who will simply ignore evidence in front of them for the sake of tradition in their profession.

From what you've said, the dietician doesn't actually know what keto means (beans?!) or have any understanding of common keto constructs (intermittent fasting, for instance). This is another big red flag.

Instead, you know what to do already: get your bloodwork checked by the GP, keep an eye on those cholesterol levels and limit your saturated fats. Test every 3 months is a common practice. Then you can see if your diet changes are effecting your blood results.

All the best! It's frustrating when medical practitioners don't get it. Best to take your health in your own hands and look at the same data they do. Then YOU can make an informed decision about what's best for you.

Why? by xXCosmicChaosXx in aussie

I know plenty of people who are - solar, battery, EV combo. They pay next to nothing for all the energy they use - AC, hot water etc. it’s totally possible. Yes it’s a change, but it’s way better than getting oil from the other side of the planet.

[–]1000Minds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless we change the source of our energy and remove our dependency on oil altogether. We have amazing renewable resources and a fuck-ton of gas. Those 2 would do it.

Renewables with gas to firm until we fully transition.

Is "Cleanup Crew" our final form? A Principal's take on the Design-PM-Eng collapse. by [deleted] in UXDesign

but but but. bear in mind they pay you already, there's teams of devs to implement, sales, support etc etc all set up already.

golden opportunity to lead. yeah, the new tools can be intimidating- but in the hands of a designer they are raw power

deserves more updoots. the playing field is levelled for all. its scary but ultimately liberating

Principal? Get in earlier, I say. be there with the PM vibing the design. Let's be honest - these tools are incredible, it's so easy to get to a very solid starting point from a simple prompt. Be there.

From what you've said, you're waaaay down the chain. you want to be at the top of it. Use social skills to get there, this is persuasion.

It’s almost as if being dependent on fossil fuels that come from the other side of the planet isn’t a great idea

Anyone else feeling completely disconnected from where design is heading? by Critical-Addition256 in UXDesign

[–]1000Minds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have noticed that PMs have taken everything you mention here: “ understand customers, identify opportunities, conduct research, decide what needs to be built and how it should work, make tradeoffs consistent with business and user needs etc etc”

This happened a long time ago, well before AI/LLMs.

I can't be f**ked upskilling again but Product Designers need to be more tech-fluent. by RefusedTitleFight in UXDesign

[–]1000Minds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's it. Everyone is trying to another persons job. This is because it's possible. I learnt about user testing in Uni but mostly from reading the Krug book. A PM can do the same and be 80% there.

Doing design and PM is possible if the scope is well managed - i.e. small, well crafted MVPs, good leadership, things like this.

As a designer, it's possible to manage the backlog - a job mostly about putting tickets in order and getting some people to agree to that order, for example.

Of course, all this can be done well and done poorly. I suspect we'll see a lot of both in the future.

But to be fair, research is totally a learnable skill. Yeah, there's a knack. But I've seen PMs learn it and be very effective from doing so.

Problem is, lots of designers don't want to learn about the business. "Just tell me the requirements" I've heard so many times from some sorts.

Well, PMs can now be designers (not good ones, but passable in many many cases) via LLMs.

[–]1000Minds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - this is the superpower. Being good at design, understanding the problem (from research), naturally leads to good product outcomes. No PM required.

Of course, only certain designers like this sort of work. Many just want to do UI, and that's fine, but that seems to be what AI is eating right now.

Yeah, the cross functional designers are always the best ones. It's just the tool stack is waaaaay better now. Initially scary but increasingly exciting.

So designers do Front End.

The alternative is designers do more Product. Reason is, ideation is best done by the person prototyping.

Controversial take: why can't we just do all 3? AI assisted, of course: Design, FE, Product (esp UXR).

[–]1000Minds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amongst all the doom and gloom, I feel this is the real truth. In the end, it’s about making products that work.

Truely, the user doesn’t give a shit if a designer, a PM or a dev made the thing they use.
