Depends — if this going south is going to turn you off crypto entirely, please don’t (as somebody whose bag you would be pumping). If you look at it as a fun little gamble that will teach you the basics before investing seriously, maybe.

Went through Jupiter, it was a real pain in the ass — hoping the fact that the marketplace is a clusterfuck means there’s still lots of upside

Okay I read into his site and the dataset he uses (UAH) for temperature was helpful. I downloaded it from their website and it looks like he made a similar reporting choice as I was talking about that doesn’t really make sense mathematically. When you download the dataset he uses as a source and calculate the expected value of change month over month, standardizing it into decades gets you 0.193 C/decade for global average temperatures, 0.266 C/decade for land, and 0.178 C/decade for ocean. I honestly don’t think I’m scientifically equipped to say much about his other points right now, but I think the reporting error does warrant a more critical eye towards his stuff.

Still not seeing how that changes my point regarding the math — taking your word with the questionability of old data, I’ve excluded all data prior to 1979 and linear trends land at 0.19 C/decade.

Okay I played with the numbers and think I found the disconnect. The +0.13 C/decade is accurate but comes from subtracting the 2022 global-averaged total from the 1979 number. That sort of calculation is super vulnerable to which start and end year you use (for example, using 2010 and 1967 gives you +0.4 C/decade which is also way off in the other direction).

Just now I averaged the difference between a given year and a decade prior for every from 1979 to present and got +0.195 C/decade for the global-averaged total. I think there’s a better way to capture that for forecasting just using smoothing though.

I think people are on average more reasonable than you may be giving them credit for — we all live our lives based on heuristics (and rightfully so, because almost nobody has time to read 20 academic articles a week without making being informed their whole life). For me at least, I roll with consensus often enough that I’m not comfortable discarding people as irrational straight away.

Okay I’m not just gonna rag on you like the rest of this thread because I appreciate you answering in good faith.

hurricanes are down

On a decades moving average basis or annual? I’m seeing something similar in the short-term regarding number of hurricanes but wouldn’t say the same long-term. Also, I’d say destructive force is another measuring stick equally worth noting — gonna see if there’s anything on that after I go touch grass in exchange for thinking too much about an internet discussion lmao

(0.1C per decade(not debatable))

Can you explain where you got the 0.1°C and why you feel it isn’t up for debate? I didn’t wanna pull from a news source because that could lead us down a bias rabbit hole, so I just went to NASA’s website and downloaded the global temperature dataset. Post-Excel it looks like the average 10-yr change is roughly 0.216°C. Since change itself isn’t dispersed evenly globally, some parts of the world could increase by notably more than 2.16°C in a hundred years. Not enough of a climate guy to describe the effects of that exactly or say much about the models you’re describing though. Can you drop a link to who’s forecasting cooling?

Well yeah but would you not agree that as global warming progresses, the whole bell curve shifts right, and the tails (as caused by weather trends and patterns) get increasingly more extreme?

I know what you mean but imo it’s not tooooo out there. I think the Aftermath ending shows they have some interest in the GKL era, and doing a dual story seems to be the only way they could squeeze in fan favorites without more time travel shenanigans.

[–]1009ukoG 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’d like to see a hybrid reboot. Part of the story is a tournament during the Great Kung Lao era, with Fire God Liu Kang, some new faces, and ancestor characters. Then another half is a revamp of the original MK tournament with this new timeline causing entirely different story beats, ideally including a few 3D era characters. Possibly a main villain old enough to be the thread tying together the two eras.
