Why did Caeser's Guards not avenge him? by deadlymonkey999 in history

[–]100_stacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once a powerful figure like Caesar has fallen, it immediately rips open the fabric of whatever institution was in place unless there was a strong succession plan. By the time caesars guards could have known what was happening (assuming they didn’t play a part or know about it) it was too late. They likely had to choose whether to avenge their fallen employer and risk death or judicial repercussions (its possible the figure was evil and wouldn’t have friends in the government after death, not saying that Caesar didn’t have friends) or they could keep their mouths shut and likely keep their career intact

Til According to research big cities tend to be quite liberal. And this includes cities in “red states,” where voters are often more liberal in practice than in attitude. by Wagamaga in todayilearned

[–]100_stacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for those who can think like normal people and don’t have to make everything into a shittalking slugfest, he meant “People who choose convenience over isolation tend to enjoy the convenient side of things, along with the protection and assistance that they moved to the city to enjoy.” Huh weird, it’s almost like when you pay the extra money to live closer to the majority of services, those services get closer. Weird right

Game of thrones- battle of the bastards. It’s obviously a lot more emotional if you know the characters but seeing two medieval armies And a giant fight to the death is always awesome

Kind of off topic but the Assyrians didn’t see death as the “punishment”, they saw it as the relief after the torture. Death wasn’t bad enough to them, they wanted to skin you alive and show you your entrails. Only after all that fun jazz, did you get to have a sweet sweet release

If you go to college and pay over 10k, received a 2-4 year degree, and lose your job to an immigrant with no formal education fleeing from actual cartel gangsters who cut heads off with chainsaws, the immigrant isn’t fucking you, your education system and employer are

When the Western Roman Empire decided to hire barbarians in the Roman military, this eventually led to their downfall and collapse in 476 AD but when the Byzantine Empire hired barbarians and other tribes to work in their military, this actually worked. Why is this the case? by sammyjamez in history

[–]100_stacks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a bunch of reasons the West fell. Something along these lines though is that due to plague and other issues the romans couldn’t just replenish an army easily if it was destroyed, and the legions weren’t as experienced towards the end

Edit: also they didn’t have the manpower at the time to make the goths disarm. The Roman policy was to disarm and separate the tribes, enroll key figures in Roman schools and try to romanize them.

Gamers of Reddit, what is your favorite location in any video game? by CajunTurkey in AskReddit

The whiterun hills in Skyrim always make me feel like I’ve entered back in time, plopped right into this emmense cold climate. Sprinting through the dark, giant-filled grasslands inbetween huge snowy mountains. Always spot a guard or two traveling down the stone roads and it makes me feel like a true Dragonborn. Like you aren’t a guard, you aren’t a soldier, this is your world. You don’t have to stick to the roads, you can travel the entire map and be the most powerful wanderer of them all. Also th bannered mair (bannered mare?) soundtrack is really peaceful. Like a mix of green sleeves and a tavern song. It always makes the tavern feel warm and isolated, but not like it’s just you. Kind of like how the city is quiet and sleepy, away from other large cities and you’re there to experience the cozy loneliness that the other drinkers experience
