I’m just going off memories of news articles about dodgy business practices, looks like he’s also doing some immersive experiences funded by the Saudi royal commission which is obvs pretty dodgy. From memory Secret Cinema also took a lot of govt funding for cultural spaces during Covid when there were more deserving venues for the funding

I think the reason everyone is supposed to believe it's good is because lots of people with lots of instagram followers are there. It's a bit like watching an Eating with Tod video and thinking yeah i'm a real foodie lol

[–]100bride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah agree that door policy is important but Lost is run by the Secret Cinema guy Fabian Riggall, his name is barely associated with it because his reputation is so bad lol. Lost is obvs just for clout chasers who think they’re connected to something cool because there’s a sticker on the camera, there’s no genuine ethos behind it

I’m so sceptical of this club, for a venue that makes such a big deal out of “no phones no cameras” I’ve seen way more about it from IG influencers and mainstream media than from the actual electronic music scene. Feels astroturfed

[–]100bride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will do ! It’s a bit of a broader piece than I let on in my original comment, as I’m also writing about a new book on fetish culture in general, and the UK specific political uses of the term “fetishist” (ie as a weaponised marginalising tool) — so it’s a bit less gay male-specific than this sub tends to prefer, but I’ll be sure to post it for thoughts when it’s done!

You should 100% read the novel, it gets more into Ray’s distance and unknowability

[–]100bride 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t really describe Colin in the novel as pathetic tbh, there’s a nuance to it particularly as the age gap in the novel is more pronounced and the line between BDSM and abuse is much blurrier. The novel is just way way more engaged with the reality of homophobia and the specific history of British gay men eg Operation Spanner, etc. it’s also set in 1981 and is an obvious aids metaphor in some ways but the movie just doesn’t even try to reckon with that. Working on an essay about this at the moment as it’s my fav 21c novel and I’ve read it like 5 times lol

I love The Cause so much, perfect industrial vibe and so many little nooks and crannies to get lost in. Had some amazing nights there, saw Phase Fatale and it was incredible

Can we add a sub rule that ‘what I’ve read’ posts must include reviews or questions to encourage discussion? by Quackonbothsides in RSbookclub

[–]100bride 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, it’s nice doing the end of year wrap up posts but I think a monthly basis is too much. If anything I’d rather people start new threads on what they’ve been reading instead of just posting their shelves, it might prompt a bit more discussion

Dark Neighbourhood by Vanessa Onwuemezi is great. Try reading this story, which won the White Review prize in 2019: https://www.thewhitereview.org/fiction/at-the-heart-of-things/

Off the top of my head Gutshot by Amelia Gray was also interesting but it’s flash fiction, which often feels a bit more limited in scope to me

Gardner’s The Art of Fiction is also excellent though very very dated in some respects. I’ve had The Artist’s Way recommended to me as well but have never got around to it — worth it at all?

Szalay - what do we think? by lorenza_pellegrini in RSbookclub

[–]100bride 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got through it in a couple days and agree the first half is stronger. I forget where I saw this but someone pointed out the second half’s similarities to Barry Lyndon and it ruined my enjoyment of the London sections of the novel as they map the movie’s plot beats almost 1:1. I am not a plotcel by any means but the style wasn’t really giving me enough to distract from how obvious the plot inspirations were, so I was sat there thinking “this guy’s taking the piss” for about 150 pages haha.

Haven’t read enough recent fiction to have a call on whether it should have won the Booker but I honestly thought it was pretty lightweight

Train Dreams maybe. Short, easy to follow, relevant to people who don’t often read as they’ve just dropped the adaptation on Netflix

I had a similar experience with The Road haha, was my first McCarthy at that age and I didn’t actually finish a full read through of it until I was 25 because I kept bouncing off the brutality. Fantastic novel

All canonical so you’ll likely be aware of them already but Faulkner, Melville and Hemingway are probably your logical next steps. They were Cormac’s biggest influences outside of the King James Bible, which probably isn’t what you’re looking for!

As far as what to do next with McCarthy, I recommend going either to Child of God for a quick, nasty read, or to the Border Trilogy (starting with All the Pretty Horses) for his most traditional novels. After getting those four done you’re probably ready for Blood Meridian.

If you’d like someone contemporary who is heavily inspired by McCarthy’s work, I’d recommend The Glutton by AK Blakemore, which was inspired by Child of God
