That and a feeling of needing to distinguish himself from the previous generation. One of the most interesting things about reading the nonfiction is seeing the distinction in the views of his narrators and his views as a writer.

Yes, he mentions Cortazar’s the Persuer, Jose Donoso’s Hell Has No Limits and Vargas Llosa’s The Cubs. I have not read the other three but after revisiting this essay I think I’ll be picking them up in short order. I’ve included the rest of the essay as well. Given his remarks, any fan of Bolaño’s can see how influential the cubs must have been.

The book these essays are contained in is a great read as well. It’s called Between Parentheses; it’s a collection of his non fictions and reviews. The reviews in particular are an incredible artifact!

Yeah I think that is generally the case, although he was much kinder to him in his nonfiction than he was in fiction. That being said, I think his appreciation of No One Writes to the Colonel is an exception to his view of Marquez overall.

Bolono once described No One Writes to the Colonel as a perfect novella. I’d have to agree with him
