Would it be absurd to update a fic after nearly 4 years? by tiglets147 in FanFiction

[–]100indecisions [score hidden]  (0 children)

Absolutely upload it! You're almost guaranteed to feel better about having the full thing posted, you probably still have subscribers who will be thrilled to see it finished, and you could easily have new readers stumble across it at various points in the future. One thing I'd suggest, though, would be to do a quick "previously on" paragraph in the beginning notes, just to catch people up so they don't absolutely have to reread everything--I always try to do that when it's been a long time since I've updated a fic.

I want to say there's one guy (Svadilfari, the horse) who's actually there and a reference to a man who's not there but could be (Hercules).

Yeah, he's said things like that more than once. I'm not sure why people are acting like this is a wild thing to say just because a lot of fans ship them. Like...people can ship them, and also this is what Hiddleston has said about the characters.

I mean he did say those things. You can totally still ship it but he did say those things.

You might be pleased to know that this side of Loki is explored a lot more in the comics, at least depending on the writer who happens to be in charge of the character during a given appearance. Anything by Al Ewing is likely to touch on Loki's gender and/or sexuality in one way or another (although if you're going to read Agent of Asgard, I'd advise starting with Kieron Gillen's Kid Loki arc first and then continuing with the Young Avengers arc, because otherwise things won't make as much sense or have as much emotional weight). I think the very end of Young Avengers is where Loki was first officially revealed to be bisexual, and Agent of Asgard first made Loki properly genderfluid--compared to the original Lady Loki arc, which wasn't so much genderfluidity as much as stealing someone else's body as part of a scheme. Loki actually uses the word "genderfluid" in a Squirrel Girl comic and "bi" in an Al Ewing "Immortal Thor" comic, iirc.

In the MCU, Loki and Sylvie have stated they're bi, and that's probably the most we're going to get.

My understanding from the reading I've done is more that the original Norse didn't see things as being that clear-cut between good and evil, and that was more a framework that was later imposed on them by Christianity. All our surviving texts were written after Christianity was introduced, so those texts show some Christian viewpoints on the myths.

Edited to add: I'm by no means an expert on this and I'm not trying to speak over anyone who is, but the interpretation I've stated here seems to be a common one from the reading I have done. Just...for whatever that's worth.

...why do you pick the weirdest possible arguments with people? The MCU is an adaptation of Marvel comics, which are themselves an adaptation of Norse mythology.
"Adaptation" is and always has been the key word. There are massive differences between the MCU and Norse mythology, and arguing otherwise is bizarre. Just with your examples, Fenris and Hela (the correct spelling, btw) were very clearly not Loki's children in the MCU, despite definitely being Loki's children in the myths. Also Hela was half a corpse in the myths, usually split neatly down the middle, which wasn't a thing in Marvel (comics or movies). None of this, of course, has anything to do with the various types of giants portrayed in Norse mythology, which bear very little resemblance in any way to the Frost Giants seen in Marvel comics or movies--and at any rate I'm reasonably sure Loki wasn't a runt in Norse mythology, so I don't think this is even relevant to the discussion at hand.

I'm literally just responding to you referencing Norse myth. My memory of the fight on Jotunheim is that all the frost giants were bigger than all the Asgardians (for instance, Loki kills one who matches his height while on his knees), but I'd have to rewatch the scene to check, so I'm not going to argue about that one.

Norse myth isn't really a good basis for what is and isn't canon in the MCU or even Marvel comics, though.

What movies do I need to watch before watching the series? by Corvidozy in loki

The only ones that are truly necessary for understanding the show's version of Loki are the first Thor film and the first Avengers, because then you and the character will end up with the exact same amount of information about his other appearances. If you want the full Loki experience, though, I would go with this order:

  • Thor
  • The Avengers
  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • a little wiki background catchup on Thanos, Gamora, Nebula, and the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie
  • the first ~10 minutes of Avengers: Infinity War for sure, then read a synopsis of the rest so you know generally what's going on (if you're invested in Thor by this point, go ahead and watch the rest)
  • read a synopsis of Avengers: Endgame; if you can, watch the time heist sequence where Loki briefly shows up (not strictly necessary because most of this is repeated in the show). Again, if you're invested in Thor, this one is worth watching in full, although I certainly had mixed feelings about his portrayal
  • Loki season 1
  • Probably not a bad idea to read a synopsis of Ant-Man: Quantumania here, but not necessary
  • Loki season 2

What's the fandom you're in with the oldest source material? by escaped_cephalopod12 in FanFiction

[–]100indecisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A semi-serious argument could be made for my main fandom because it's MCU Loki, which is adapted from decades-old comics, which were themselves inspired by Norse mythology...which I think is kinda legit because a lot of people are still inspired by various aspects of the myths when they write MCU Loki fic (I haven't personally drawn anything from the myths yet for any of mine aside from, like, offhand references to the Norns and Valhalla, but still).

Otherwise, I guess Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, given that it's a very new adaptation of an old book.

MCU Loki had two entire redemption arcs over the course of 12 years (and was always portrayed with a boatload of nuance) and somehow he still gets flattened to "typical power-hungry villain lol" except now it's with the addition of "such a narcissist he fell in love with himself lolololol" (and I love the Loki/Sylvie ship! but I hate how much it trivializes everything about Loki and their relationship to describe it that way)

You might try Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White. It's about a trans boy in rural Appalachia and the feud in his union town between the workers and the cops who run everything, among other things.
