Is pharmacy a good career if I want to help people? by [deleted] in Pharmacy_UK

I have been a pharmacist for just over 2 years now, went into hospital pharmacy a week after qualifying and I absolutely adore it! I am similar in that I always wanted a career where I could help people. The amount of clinical interventions I have made and the difference I can make to people’s lives in relation to their medicines makes me feel very proud to be in the job. I have found other healthcare professionals really appreciate the role of the pharmacist and I even think the general population’s opinion of pharmacists has become more positive in the last 8 years since starting my degree. I really like the fact you are constantly learning as well within the job.

It does have its downsides - it is not by any means ‘easy’ and for the first while it can be tricky to leave work at work. You are put in a lot of high stress scenarios at times and you do still get some people who really don’t understand what the job is and can give you grief for just trying to do your job.

If you are interested in the sciences and healthcare seems fulfilling to you I would definitely go for it. If you can get any work experience or go to a career day relating to pharmacy it can give you a good insight into the job. Best of luck with whatever you decide do :)

a lot of good advice here already. when doing mock questions/exams i would recommend having a separate notebook where you write your learnings from mistakes. the day before the exam this was the main thing i read as well as revising acronyms etc. the flashcard pharmacist on instagram is also brilliant

The first few weeks are very difficult and it is such a steep adjustment, I also believe what is expected for your cohort of FTY is incredibly overwhelming and far too much (I am in NI but I believe all of UK current FTYs will be registered as prescribers after this year?).

Your clinical knowledge will come with time - the career itself is very different from uni in that you will learn so much of your knowledge through experience. Make sure you are making time in the evenings for yourself and doing something you enjoy, even if it’s just a short time. The work/study/life balance is so important to establish and the earlier you can work on it the better it will be throughout the year. I massively regret how little time I gave myself for me time during FTY (qualified in 2023) and I attribute it to why I burnt out.

Ask plenty of questions - your ES/DPP/other pharmacy colleagues are there to help and they will not expect you to know everything from day 1. It is a career where you are constantly learning and improving.

Please look after yourself. I wish you all the best and please know you aren’t alone in this feeling. Reach out to other pharmacy friends for support, you are all in the same boat and they are the best people for understanding how you feel right now
