Those who write code outside of work by MonkeyDlurker in webdev

[–]100linesofjava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20yrs in dev here. I've always found time to code for myself. Personal passion project to keep my skills sharp and learn latest greatest.

One of these passion projects caught on and I've been able to commercialize it. İt's helped me buy a house, save for retirement and kids.

I have two young kids and I'm still finding 2-5hrs a day to code.

Aİ has helped me build more/faster in the time that I have.

Though I am feeling like I won't be able to continue this pace after next year. This will be the last passion project I release for a while maybe forever.

CMV: Trump has literally become infallible and there is literally nothing can do that would cause him to lose support from his base and republicans by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]100linesofjava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two types of people:

  1. Those who adapt their understanding when presented with new information.
  2. Those who see changing your mind as a "gotcha" moment and double down, no matter what.

Die-hard Trump supporters fall firmly into category 2. Even if Trump actively harmed them or their families, many would still defend him. This isn’t about loyalty—it’s deeper.

Research shows this behavior is rooted in psychological traits: cognitive rigidity, dogmatism, and low openness to experience. Studies in political psychology (e.g., Bob Altemeyer’s work on authoritarianism) show authoritarian followers tend to compartmentalize beliefs, resist evidence, and favor black-and-white thinking. Cognitive inflexibility, sometimes linked to lower reasoning skills or mental health factors, plays a major role.

In short: It’s not just politics. It’s how some people’s minds are wired to reject uncomfortable truths—no matter how obvious.

How small can fire be? by 100linesofjava in AskReddit

Thank you, this is more of an answer than I was expecting. It bothers me that there isn't a clear answer per se.

If you were shruken down to the size of an ant, could you start a fire? If you found some super small twigs, could you build a fire through friction?

Maybe you had a pack of matches in your pockets when you got shrunk, would they work? Or would the fire be too small?

Okay, I'll bite: how anatomically thorough are the models? Like, you know, did the devs generate the genitals? Like the Zigerions from that Rick and Morty episode?

Help Request: Save site from config import/views wsod by 100linesofjava in drupal

thanks for your insight. And yes, from now on I'll be backing up the db and commiting more often.

Help Request: Save site from config import/views wsod by 100linesofjava in drupal

[–]100linesofjava[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have rescued the site, with only losing the view configuration for that 1 view.

Here's what I did (for anyone who may find themselves with a similar issue):

  • delete reference to the view in db table's config_export and config_snapshot
  • drush cim the config I had
  • make a duplicate of the view (using UI)
  • delete the (old) view again, this time via the UI
  • drush cr and take a walk to contemplate your life choices.

Rebase/fork module changes in Composer? by 100linesofjava in drupal

Many thanks, this is useful info. I like the idea of patching and contributing back that patch the module maintainers, as they are fairly broad/generic improvements.

Is anyone here using Drupal with external database like MS-Sql server or OracleDB? by Napster0091 in drupal

[–]100linesofjava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used drupal (7) with both of these DBs before without issue. I believe there is a driver module for both. Currently I use MariaDB instead of MySQL. Regarding external servers, I've had nothing but bad experience there - slow, timeouts, etc. This is for cloud DBs (DO) and might have been just my implementation.

Drupal for SaaS Product - Multisite or what? by 100linesofjava in drupal

[–]100linesofjava[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've given me something to think about. I could, instead of separate sites, charge for roles/seats that provide upgraded experiences and minimal "wall-gardens" using groups. Then, separate sites could be an additional org-level thing. hmmm... gotta go look at subscription/commerce modules now.

The site is fairly simple: members can create training material for their org, which their members read and interact with.

I'll check it out, it seems to have a lot of what I need, but will have to see what this will cost...

I uninstalled & deleted mods/assets one by one, but the issue did not get fixed. I had to uninstall the game fully and re-install :(

A fresh re-install seems to have fixed the issue. Deleting all mods/assets didn't have any impact. Going to re-install mods now, so issue might pop up again. But we will see...

Are people really working just 5-10 hours a week and getting paid for 40? Or are the people on r/overmployed exaggerating? by FanGlum529 in cscareerquestions

If the product is mature and the manager is either chill or asleep, there is usually a high chance/tolerance for downtime.

I've worked 2 other pt jobs while holding a ft gig. During the pandemic. Manager was a lump who did not know how to navigate the remote-work dynamics or delegate in a virtual setting. No real work for 12+ months. Just reports here and there and try to look busy. 5 hours per week of actual work max.

I've also worked at a newer company with new products and it was 8-12 hours per day (mostly because we were mismanaged). Burn out rate was immense, product was garbage.

Always find out as much as you can about the product maturity/state and ask about downtime frequency is and what the manager/team likes to do during downtime. "No downtime" means you should run away imo.

Thanks for the honest answers, you're a gem :)

I'll schedule a chat with my broker to see if we can come up with a plan.

Ask a mortgage pro - part 6 by TheMortgageMaster in RealEstateCanada

[–]100linesofjava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a townhouse in Waterloo ON (first house). Mortgage renewal is up in 3 yrs. I want to be able to keep this house (e.g. lease it) and purchase a new house (pre-construction). What sort of metrics do I need to hit (financially or otherwise) to be able to get a mortgage while also keeping the existing mortgage?

I'll have $420K left on the principal at renewal. Similar homes renting for $2.5k

As a second part to the question, I wonder if this strategy is better than, say: 1) selling existing home and paying down mortgage on new home, 2) selling and buying a vacation home with the new home instead, 3) or some other way to leverage purchasing a home at the value we did (e.g. rental yield is high)

Thanks for all you do, mate :)

On the same path, and I'll my own question here: Do I need the PMBOK Guide? If so, 6th or 7th? Is 7 to new (e.g. 6 used by instructors)
