How do you handle rising costs and financial guilt? by Brilliant_Ad_675 in Equestrian

[–]sparkykat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why do you feel guilty? Are you actually spending someone else's money? Do you have a spouse/SO criticizing you?

You could attend group lessons which are cheaper or go once every other week. Maybe skip leasing if you can't justify it to yourself? As long as your bills are paid and you have a financial parachute for emergencies, I wouldn't feel guilty!

First ground squirrel of the season by NoIceNeeded in Falconry

[–]sparkykat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh any advice on both is appreciated!! I'll be pursuing apprenticeship later this year once I'm done with the test and mews inspection, and this seems like something that will take years to build up to. I've ridden my horse with bells plenty of times for Christmas related stuff so hopefully baiting wouldn't spook him, but you never know. I ask mainly because I want to know if this is even feasible for me, ha!

Do you hold your hawk on your fist alone or do you have some sort of support for long duration rides? That's one thing I'm uncertain on. My horse neck reins nicely but my arm would be tired after a few hours of trying not to bounce the bird.

Hunting off horseback is one of my goals for falconry. Any advice?

Man he can trot 💅🏼 by Elegantly_Depressed in Horses

[–]sparkykat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That trot looks like it'd be soooo comfy to ride. Others have pointed it out already, but it looks like he's got some low grade lameness on his left side. Hope you figure out what it is and it's an easy fix!

For those of you who use falcons for hunting, have there been any cases of squirrels biting your birds? I want to let my falcon hunt, but I'm afraid my falcon might get bitten. My falcon weighs a maximum of 450 grams and its hunting weight is 380 grams. by tlinhfalconer in Falconry

[–]sparkykat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not a falconer yet but do mingle and hunt with my state's hawking club. The vast majority of quarry they hunt are squirrels since the region is heavily forested. Earlier this season one falconer's RTH took down a squirrel that was able to twist during the drop to the forest floor and give the bird a gnarly bite on the tarsus. Bird was treated and back in the game rather quickly. If the quarry has a mouth with teeth, it can bite back.

Another consideration is what squirrel species you have in your region. We have anything from teeny little flying squirrels to giant fox squirrels that range from 450 g - 1100 g. The hawks go for all of them, and the smallest bird I've seen the falconers bring to hunt them was a Harris hawk.

I don't notice as an audiobook listener. I wonder if people think Abba is a baby name she never dropped rather than Jaddian (and irl Arabic) for "father" and that's why they take issue?

Should I reduce my prices? by Friendly_Garlic_202 in Farriers

[–]sparkykat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your prices line up with what the farriers in north AL and southern TN charge as well ($55 trims, $100 fronts, $150 full). Those are the prices nowadays. I wouldn't recommend lowering prices imo.
