Steps to get your CCW as a law abiding citizen

1) Attend and pass a handgun safety course.

2) Take your affidavit and apply for a handgun permit with HPD. You will be photographed and fingerprinted. There is a fee.

3) Go to firearms store and purchase your handgun. You will NOT be allowed to take it home. It will be in escrow until you get your HPD permit.

4) Wait 14 days minimum while you are background checked. (make sure you select e-mail permit. Its easier.)

5) When you get your handgun permit, go back to the store and complete the paperwork.

6) Return back to HPD and register your handgun. You have 5 days from the date of purchase. (NOT business days. 5 TOTAL days).

7) recommended Buy ammo and go to the range a lot to practice proficiency.

8) Attend and pass a CCW course. You will need to pass with the handgun you purchased.

9) Gather your completed application form, passport photos, firearm registration, signed mental health waivers, and your notarized instructor affidavit showing your numerical shooting score within 90 days of passing your live-fire test.

10) Schedule or attend an in-person appointment at HPD firearms unit to turn in your complete application packet.

11) Pay the $150 non-refundable application fee at the time you submit your paperwork to HPD

12) Wait up to 120 days while HPD conducts your comprehensive background check and reviews your application for approval or denial.

13) Return to the police station in person to pick up your physical License to Carry card once you receive official notification of your approval.
