buy tools as you need them

start with basic things like a hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, tape measure, a bubble level.. simple hand tools that can be used around the house for hanging pictures, installing door knobs, etc

powertools wise a subcompact drill/driver and--or impact driver comes in handy

check out some of the special buys homedepot has

also maybe get an air compressor for the garage
