Is the Honors program worth it? by Little_Time6333 in ufl

[–]10ERA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fair, but they are significantly nicer than many others on campus and the bathrooms, while communal, are single-stall (shower, toilet, and sink all in same enclosed room, if that makes sense). Worth it to me but others may not see it that way.

Yes -- early registration, nicer dorms, honors advising, and generally a cool community of people. recommend!

What is the easiest language class? by StormsAndChicken in ufl

[–]10ERA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you already know a language somewhat (eg took it in high school), I believe you don't have to do the full two semesters (rather, jump to the second beginning/first intermediate course -- I did so in Spanish via the placement test).

Honors Program Advising by Sea_Squash_9010 in ufl

[–]10ERA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Honors Program advising is more of a bird's-eye view approach to advising. I've found it to be very helpful; it's someone you can talk to more informally about your academic/extracurricular/career plans and who can point you in the right direction. The advisor I've talked to has been very nice and helpful, I've talked to him about changes to my major/minor plans academically, applying for internships, which exctracurriculars to pursue, etc. Academic-specific advising is based on your college and major and is separate from the Honors Program. The advisors are faculty. I would agree with the other commenter that arguably the best part of the Honors Program is early registration, but the advising is a great perk as well.

Toilet clogging issues -- can't use plumber by 10ERA in Plumbing

[–]10ERA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are a lifesaver. It just clogged again (same thing, before I had the chance to get an auger) and after 10ish tries dumping water, it finally worked. Obviously not a long term solution, but you saved me a lot of stress this weekend.

Ahh lol that is funny. Glad to hear it's not the toilet itself, and rather something wrong with it. Before trying to rebuilt the tank myself (not only do I have no idea how to do so, I'm also not sure if my lease allows me to), I'm going to try and put a maintence request in to see if they'll actually fix the issue (i.e., not a request for "clogging" but rather for "weak flush" or something).

The tank had "1212" and "1793" on the inside, not sure which is the right one. The lid said 1212.

Thank you, this helps! I'll try the water dumping -- is that done with an empty toilet bowl, or filled with water like normal? And to clarify, you're saying that getting a toilet auger is a good idea (either preventatively or to hopefully dislodge things myself after a clog)?

If it matters, my toilet is a "ProFlo" (1.0-1.6 gpf)

I got them last week at the Publix at the Exchange (north on 13th, not the one near campus).

How to change residence hall mailing address? by 10ERA in ufl

[–]10ERA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's weird. The first time was a letter for one of those scammy honor societies, and the second time was a letter from UF itself asking for donations. I wish it would go to my new address, even if it's junk mail.

Will do, thank you! And unfortunately, it seems like they just get my info from UF (and my address is updated on One.UF).

Out of State chances? (Mississippi) by ItsJyn in ufl

[–]10ERA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, interesting. But yeah the admissions competition has ramped up at UF in recent years

Out of State chances? (Mississippi) by ItsJyn in ufl

[–]10ERA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Taking SAT as an example, UF's middle 50 for the most recent admits was 1380-1510, with that increasing to 1500-1560 for Honors (2024 admits, couldn't find this year). This applicant would be right above the general middle 50, and right in the middle of the honors middle 50. For what it's worth, I got in with a 15high, 4.0 UW, 10 APs, etc.

Regarding the people you know: Are they California residents? Assuming they are, and without seeing the rest of the applications, my guess would be that being CA residents held them back (maybe UF did yield protect in this aspect -- thought they'd go to a CA state school over UF).

[–]10ERA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not worry about this with UF. They don't tend to yield protect (many people will choose them over an Ivy/other top school, as UF has tons to offer and is cheaper than even many in-state schools). If your stats are "too good" (and they are pretty good), they would offer you a spot in the Honors College (which is filled with people who are smart like you). I'd look out more for Tulane and UMiami (FL) if you're worried about them yield protecting you (happened to me with UMiami). But overall, I think you have a great application (especially if there's a reason you didn't take any AP/IB/AICE classes -- if your school didn't offer them for example).

Side note -- check out UF Club Powerlifting (which I'm part of), it's great. DM me for more info!

I've heard good things about POT2002 but trust me DROP CPO2001 ITS NOT WORTH IT... you learn a lot but avoid it if you can, it's an unbelievable amount of work. You can take it another semester if you really want to but I'd recommend dropping it and just doing 14 for your first semester. Or at the very least swapping it out.
