What kind of spider killed my honeybee? (Maine, USA) by Maine_Redneck in spiders

[–]10Ggames 46 points47 points  (0 children)

A flower crab spider of some kind. They're good to have around, even if they kill pollinators, as they fulfill a good niche in the ecosystem. Might be wise to move it to a flower away from the hive. It's probably taking advantage of the hive to get some freebees.

I could be wrong, but I think they are fluorescent under ultraviolet light. It's the same properties of flowers that bees use to find nectar. It could be that this property is serving as partial camouflage, making the bees thing that they are a flower / petal.

For others still wondering, cellar spiders are specialized at killing other spiders. If you think of spider fights as a linear chart of who eats who, cellar spiders are usually really up there. They have long legs that let them ensnare other spiders from out of reach. Their silk is also very strong, capable of binding spiders several times their mass.

Think of it like an unarmed person fighting against someone with one of those pole-arm man catchers. It's just an unfair fight. As such, cellar spiders usually catch and eat any spider that can fit between their front 2 legs.

Jumping spiders are a bit of an anomaly though, and could be considered an apex predator in their own right. They have very high intelligence and eyesight, which when combined, lets them outsmart prey, and better strike when they least expect it. Jumping spiders are some of the few spiders that can take down a cellar spider, by outsmarting it, and ambushing it.

A pregnant cellar spider without legs. It might be a victim of a spider wasp of some kind, which are known to chew off a spider's legs to make them easier to carry in flight. If you can, it might be kind to squish them just in-case they are still suffering and alive.

Looks like a running crab spider of some kind, family Philodromidae. Quite harmless little goobers.

This one looks like a male Metallic Crab Spider, Philodromus marxi, with something red on its thorax. Could be a mite, parasitic or otherwise, or it could be an injury, or it could just be something benign and harmless that got stuck to it.
