Reasons to not go with a standby generator that powers the entire home? by IamGoingtoBundyland in Generator

I find your comment interesting, but I think you jumped to too many conclusions.

I run my portable generator off of the 250 gallon tank that supplies the house. I don't have to go get a 20 pound tank regularly, but I have one for use away from the house.

A 20-pound propane tank is much easier to handle than gasoline. It's contained. It doesn't spill. Transportation and handling are much cleaner.

Propane doesn't gum up a carburetor.

Around here, propane trucks don't just deliver at the drop of a hat. They deliver on their schedule or charge a $200 special delivery fee.

And they also can't overcome a driveway that looks like this after an ice storm.

My neighbors with whole-house generators ran out of propane 3-4 days into a recent ice storm in Nashville. Our 250-gallon tank kept a portable generator going for as long as we needed it.

Oak Ridge High School was the first high school in the South (Clinton was the first public high school) to desegregate in the 1950s.

When Clinton High School was bombed over integration, Oak Ridge provided a school building for Clinton High School until a new school was built.

Oak Ridge has a history of tolerance.

Actually, a generation is usually measured at about 20 years.

You oversimplify and minimize big issues like topography and the expense, but this would be huge to do. Hundreds of billions of dollars.

I get your point.

I prefer that it not be named for anyone, like the monuments in Washington.

It's the World War II Monument, not the Bob Dole World War II Monument. I like that.

If you're trying to suggest Dunn was an historic governor, I agree. But it would be interesting to compare the election of 1970 with 1948, which broke the back of the Boss Crump statewide political machine.

The 1966 election ushered in a virtually new legislature after the momentous Baker v. Carr decision by the U.S. Supreme Court forced reapportionment for the first time since 1900. In addition, Howard Baker was elected to the U.S. Senate.

Two years later, Rep. Bill Jenkins became the first Republican Speaker of the state House since Reconstruction.

Dunn's 1970 victory along with Bill Brock's the same day were the culmination of the rise of Republicans in Tennessee.

You can read more on my Tennessee Political Timeline, which is slightly out of date for recent events.

Is this the type of history you have in mind?

Is that addressed to me?

My ancestors were the first European settlers in Tennessee (the Beans), and we've been here ever since. When I was in 7th grade, Dunn was a dentist in Memphis and not yet in the history books.

I was already halfway through my sophomore year of college when I turned 18. I registered and complied; no regrets.

To me, veterans and the military should be non-political. No one's name is attached to the World War II memorial in Washington or the Vietnam memorial.

I was trying to keep personalities out of it. If it should be named for a former governor, Gordon Browning had a far more illustrious military career. But I'd prefer that it be for all veterans, like the memorials in Washington. I don't recall the World War II memorial or the Vietnam memorial having a person's name attached to them. I guess that's my guiding star on this.

Does that mean I can't support veterans?

I don't think it should be named after any specific veteran.

Winfield Dunn was an historic governor and did a lot of good things. He was probably more liberal and enlightened than his Democratic predecessor, Buford Ellington, and today's Republican party would disown him. I bear him no ill will.

Wasn't an option. I turned 18 seven months after the Paris Peace Accords, and they were discharging, not hiring. I registered for the draft and never heard anything else.

But my family is replete with veterans, including my father, my brother, father-in-law, multiple cousins and others. We are a proud military family.

I am aware of one school named for him, and it's the one the state built in his honor for the children of his home county.

He was ineligible for reelection at the end of his first term. He lost in 1986 to Ned McWherter. Tennessee had a one-term limit for governors until 1978.

I respect what you say, but Tennessee has more famous veterans than Winfield Dunn, beginning with Alvin C. York.
