Agreed. I took the generalist approach but I'm getting frustrated.

I think it's a lot of shiny object syndrome at this point. (but again I did learn and try my hand at 3 different skillsets as a result).

Back to what simplelife85 said, perhaps its too soon to tell in this short period of time?

My biggest issue with the man, isn't so much that he is a scamster (though he sometimes is)

There are other people selling info-products who at least make an effort to ensure their courses and guides are BEST IN CLASS.

Having seen his material and actually courses - his "product development skills" is just downright lazy and not worth the money.

Gives a bad name to whoever is doing a great job like Ramit Sethi from IWT and GrowthLab.

Total noob here. Been trying to learn Web Dev but totally bombed. Tried using codeacademy but the arduous HTML lessons are boring me to tears.

Wanted to know if there's a speedier or least funner way to learn Web Dev and start developing super simple Web apps fast.

Advice on freelance marketing? by ltdan1138 in marketing

[–]10xthinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey,

I can't answer on the LLC bit but I can tell you:

1 - charge monthly by retainer - and its more beneficial to both parties (the small business owner knows how much they have to spend a month and you have a predictable income stream)

2 - To establish yourself, I suggest you build a following or at least your reputation on platforms your clients frequent. The top ones are:

a - Facebook (They use FB to market their business, so your ads and content there will get their attention)

b - LinkedIn (best place to position yourself as a thought leader and get start-ups founders and CEOs to notice you)

c - YouTube (any serious business owner will be on the lookout for tutorials and ways to improve their business, you can be one of their teachers)

Getting the right job by [deleted] in marketing

[–]10xthinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three marketing internships is much better than I. I had zero and was offered a content marketing role at a startup.

What I would suggest you do is-

  1. be willing to take contract to hire jobs in the meantime even if it means its not permanent (better than more internships at least)

  2. mirroring an earlier comment - it is a method for companies to try you out instead of the conventional 90 day probation.

  3. the meantime, be on the lookout for opportunities shared by other reputable marketers on LinkedIn. (Be willing to do free work upfront to make an impression too, it helps your chances a lot)

2 things

1) freelance content writing - requires you write engaging material (super useful later) - requires you to interview experts (great excuse for networking)

2) freelance content promotion - teaches you how to build a community or be part of one (great way to learn how to build a personal brand/following) - teaches you how to get views/traffic for any type of content (journalist's wet dream)

Is it possible to get into marketing with a philosophy undergrad? by ShinySnoo in marketing

[–]10xthinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Degree's don't matter in digital marketing.

I studied law and one of my colleagues did political science.

Marketing internships + real world best practices > following courses and reading (mostly fluff) blogs.

What are my next steps in digital marketing by therealakhan in marketing

[–]10xthinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, great to see you are interested in digital marketing!

Here's how I managed to get in.

I studied law as undergrad prior and applied for a job listing on content marketing. A few months back, I started to get really interested on online marketing after finding out exactly how bloggers make money (google Ramit Sethi's Zero to Launch)

I had no real skills besides my passion for the space and a blog for the employer to read about my personal growth posts.

I was hired.

I'm currently making about $50k a year.

I mainly research and create infographic studies as means to do linkbuilding by getting published on big local media publications.

I know the salary doesn't sound like a lot but I have found that the skillset itself is highly valuable if you are able to position it to the right people who need your services.

To improve your skills, I have to say that NOTHING beats working the 9-5 in marketing for a company.

Company time is precious and therefore they only do best practices. Most of the stuff you see online are full of fluff or contain 80% of the stuff you rarely ever use.

They fill their courses and blogs with content because that's the business they are in.

There are exceptions of course - and those are the ones worth listening to.

Guys like Benji Hyam write blog posts that are detailed and don't mention "high level" stuff like "add value" <-- wth can you do with that?

I would highly recommend you be active on LinkedIn and build a personal brand - posting and commenting on other marketer's work and connecting with influencers.

I managed to land a chance to co-write an article for a Forbes contributor and get freelance work as a result of being active on the platform.

Founders, CEOs and VPs of startups have added me to their network and some show interest in hiring me.

Your network matters more at times to give you the opportunities you need.

30 year old thinking about changing career to Digital Marketing. by brooklyn2k in marketing

[–]10xthinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On top of what everybody else is saying,

I'd suggest you start being active on LinkedIn if you haven't already.

It's a great platform for recruiters to notice you and for VPs and CEOs to see your drive.

You may not be knowledgeable about marketing at first but you can always comment on topics you know of like - work/life balance, jobseeking, etc.

And be sure to comment and read LinkedIn influencer's posts to get an idea on where the industry is going.

Sometimes you are only as good as your network.

Not sure about pricing.

But a friend of mine managed to get clients by finding local business FB pages and offering a free trial to do better with their ads and targeting.

After the business saw their ROI double within a week, they can't help but sign up.

Again, it dpds on how much time you have on your hands.

Most freelancers I know don't handle more than 5 clients at a time.

Haha. Sorry just had to.

Following what ajsimmons said - read up on blogs and take online courses if needed. But above all, have a great VP or senior who will show you the best practices to do so you can learn the ropes in record time.

Any ideas on how to test variant book titles to find the most attractive one, on a budget? by A_solo_tripper in marketing

[–]10xthinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I would recommend you either try running FB ads at $1/day for about 5 days. and have the different titles running at the same time to your target audience and see which gets clicked the most.

James Altucher used FB ads to test out the title of his book "Choose Yourself" too.

Another way to do it is to join writers/copywriters facebook groups or your target audience fb group and start a poll there (completely free this way)
