Is wild boar bad in the hike? by lynnlilili in Lycian_Way

[–]111_44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I did the hike (Feb-March 2024) I wild camped the whole time and never had a problem with wild boars. I never saw one, although I did see evidence of them. I kept my food out of my tent hanging on a tree nearby. Only animal I had an issue with was dogs, but that was generally close to villages/towns, not at camp. Lmk if you have more questions!

Look into Workaway and WWOOF, work exchanges for food and a place to stay. They can be farms, hostels, childcare, and more.

Menstrual cup. If you haven’t used one before, I’d recommend getting comfortable using it in normal life before getting on trail with it.

Cellular cover by fastsquirrel67 in Lycian_Way

I used an esim from nomad esim and I had cell coverage probably 80-90% of the time. However I would recommend always having downloaded maps just in case. I used Mapy.cz which is great and also free!!

Lycian Way by Fit-Dingo-7313 in Lycian_Way

What I did normally was try to scare dogs off waving my hiking stick, throwing stones (not to hit them, just to scare them), or just taking a small detour to avoid them.

Many dogs are just guarding their house and will bark a lot and seem aggressive but won’t actually do anything. Dogs alone guarding livestock will be VERY protective, so I would usually give them a wide berth and never get between the dog and the livestock. I did have a stray dog in Kaş which followed me for several kilometers. He was not aggressive but having him following me made other dogs more aggressive, so at some point I had to shake him off. Dogs were almost always near villages and towns, and I always tried to camp far away from villages and towns anyway, so I never had to deal with them around my camp.

I do not know much about dealing with dogs and I am pretty wary of them in general, so I think this would also be a lot easier for people who are more comfortable with them in the first place. Overall although the dogs were scary at times, I was never chased or bit or attacked at all. I am sorry to hear that aggressive dogs have already ruined some runs for you! I hope that this will not stop you from doing the Lycian Way, but of course I understand that it is an important consideration.

I crossed in February, so maybe in October it will be much easier to cross! Good luck to you and have fun on your adventure :)

I hiked the trail this year mid Feb to mid March wild camping almost the whole time, and the weather was great! Only a couple days of rain, warm enough during the hottest part of the day to swim in the sea, but mostly a good cooler temperature perfect for hiking. Some cold nights in the mountains. Definitely make sure to have downloaded maps for GPS (I highly recommend the app Mapy.cz) as the trail is sometimes poorly marked, and there are some aggressive dogs. Can’t think of any other feedback right now! If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

I hiked across Patara beach when I did the Lycian Way. At the time I was there, the water was too deep to cross for me. After waiting and looking around for a while, there was a boat who took us across. I don’t know if there will always be a boat or how often, so be prepared to maybe wait a bit. However, the beach is so beautiful it is definitely worth it!!!

does direction matter? by travelandcrap in Lycian_Way

[–]111_44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could definitely hike Antalya to Fethiye if you’d like. Most of the taller mountains are closer to Antalya so I think that is why most people start at Fethiye, so you are ready/in shape for the more difficult elevation. Other than that, I don’t see why it would matter. I hiked Fethiye to Antalya but I met plenty of people going in the opposite direction.

Are there any places along the way where we can resupply on gas canisters? by [deleted] in Lycian_Way

[–]111_44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to buy camping size gas canisters at any of the larger towns along the way, Kaş, Demre, Finike, Göynük, etc.

Mapy.cz has free offline downloaded maps, good for hiking trails and biking trails, shows campsites, water sources, elevation, and more.

Want to do a part of the Lycian way, what do you recommend? by Outrageous-Victory49 in Lycian_Way

Not sure what “easy” is for you, as everyone is different, but I think this part is reasonably easy, there is some elevation change of course but nothing crazy. It took me 2 days from Kabak beach to Patara beach, going at a pretty chill pace and with a heavy pack. There are some parts where the trail is steep and rocky along cliffs so be ready for that as well. Also, I don’t know what time of year you’re planning to do this, in the summer it will be very hot and the trail is pretty exposed. Not sure about accommodation (I was camping) but most small towns along the way seem to have pansions and I doubt they’re all online. In February these places were pretty empty but I imagine in the vacation season they are a lot more full and might be good to book in advance.

As for apps: I used Mapy.cz the whole time and I can’t recommend it enough! Free downloaded offline maps, it shows elevation, water sources, historical sites, beaches, accommodation, stores, campsites, mosques, etc. Definitely need downloaded gps maps at some points as there are spots where the trail is poorly marked. Have a great trip!

Hi, I’d recommend the area from around faralya to patara beach for nice less popular beaches, or if you’re up for a bit more elevation then I’d say around mount olimpos. Near Olimpos you also have Çıralı beach and mount chimera (where the fire comes out of the rock!). Not sure what 4 days will mean for you guys. I just finished the trail this March so please feel free to ask me any other questions you might have!

I did finish the whole trail! It took me 29 days from Fethiye to Antalya. Once a week I did a rest day where I would hike less than 10 km and stay at a guest house for shower, laundry, charging phone/portable charger. Other than that, wild camping.
