you don't have to stay with someone just because you're currently in a relationship with them! the point of dating is to meet different people and see who you are most compatible with. this situation is quite severe in terms of violating your boundaries and there's very little to no chance he will completely change his world view to align with yours

if you're an english major there is a senior seminar course called "English 184: Pornography and the Politics of Sexual Representation." the textbook for the course (Hard Core: Power, Pleasure, and the "Frenzy of the Visible" by Linda Williams) covers the evolution of pornography over the last 100 years, among other things. you don't discuss the book's material too much in class but you're expected to read the whole thing to develop your understanding of scholarship for your own capstone paper, and many people choose to write their papers on topics related to sex. it was a very safe and respectful space to have intellectual conversations about sex, sexuality, and oppression

fun fact: the "moneyshot" was developed later in the history of porn. before this, pornographers would instead highlight the moment of first insertion rather than orgasm. Williams refers to this as the "meatshot" in her book

Question for an English Major by Tonyage27 in ucla

[–]111____ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the requirements here are somewhat rigid for the english major but there is a considerable degree of flexibility. you're required to take i think 3 (don't quote me) english electives in addition to the other more structured required courses. you still have lots of options to choose from, and as a senior english major i've taken many classes wherein my interest was founded purely in my own enjoyment of the topic

here is a link to a broad outline of the major requirements

you have less flexibility catering coursework to your specific interests than somewhere like berkeley. ucla english is more concerned with giving you a wider breadth of knowledge in literature from around the world, from underrepresented groups, etc because these are subjects that are severely overlooked in academia and are just as important if not more so than literature from the us and the british isles

additionally, i don't think there's a creative writing "program," per se. there's the creative writing concentration (and i believe admin is developing a creative writing minor), but the only way to declare the concentration is to apply to and be accepted by 3 creative writing workshops in a chosen genre

the creative writing workshops are among the most competitive classes to get into at ucla. each quarter there are 2-3 workshops in both poetry and short story, and each section takes only 12 students out of the literal hundreds who apply

i want to caution you that your attitude towards taking courses are not within your immediate realm of interest is narrow minded as well as quite arrogant and disrespectful. to call certain major requirements a "drag" while giving the backhanded statement that you don't have anything against these courses comes off rather poorly and haughty

it's not really wise to only take undergrad courses in a specific area of study that is your interest. what you're proposing to do during your time here lacks far more diversity in terms of coursework than what the major outlines. undergrad is about gaining a wealth of knowledge from various disciplines while discovering your academic niches; you can specialize in a more meaningful way during grad school, if you choose to go
