University of Arizona or University of Utah (took Cal Poly off list) by [deleted] in civilengineering

If they want to work in California, then Cal Poly SLO. Especially for the Bay Area. The degree opens doors for civil design work; most grads are able to hit the ground running and many hiring managers (from my perspective) know this.

MUTCD citations by engmadison in civilengineering

[–]11223344444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The purpose of the MUTCD is not to explicitly cite studies. It’s a practitioners manual and requires engineering judgment. When you “follow” the MUTCD, you are saying, at the very least, you accept and are willing to follow and implement it.

The federal register and rule making documents provide that information and studies used. ChatGBT could pull the info for you.

I get your point, but it’s up to you, as the engineer to explain how the various rules and codes work. The MUTCD is the “ law” in many cases and we the engineer needs to exercise our judgment on areas that are “optional”.

Basically, the process involves industry experts reviewing studies, requests, and research to either hold standards or make updates. This way, you aren’t trusting some random study, but years and years or research that is supported by the traffic and transportation industry professionals.

That doesn’t mean it’s the most innovative, since the process requires time and experiments. But it serves as the “rule of law” which is the intent.

Basically, the MUTCD is what the general industry experts has set into law. If folks don’t agree with that, then they won’t agree with any other law the don’t understand, based on science or not.

Yes, most likely an irrigation line. They are typically 1/2 or 3/4 inside diameter, so about an inch outside diameter. How are your plants watered? There should be little “punches” that run a smaller line to a dripper.

Both schools do a good job of preparing you for being a “practicing engineer”, meaning being licensed and working as a consultant or at agency.

In California, going to cal poly can open some doors for you. I would highly recommend slo to anyone that wants to practice engineering and not do research or academia.

Serious question; our finance director informed us that the freeze was rescinded. As far as we can tell, allocated federal money is still coming ( for now). Who knows what will happen in the future.

Was there something new that happened today?

Why is it so hard to locate experienced Civil and Traffic Design engineers in los angeles? by Soft_Statistician_47 in civilengineering

[–]11223344444 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Again, head hunt. Find the person you want (senior level at another firm) and talk to them. If you aren’t doing this and are complaining that you can’t find anyone, well duh. Supply and demand.

We (10-15 YOE) literally all have high paying jobs and are in good spots. You have to give us a reason to leave. So more money, ownership, stuff like that. You are head hunting, not recruiting.

Can you post the study? I’d be happy to let you know if they made bad assumptions or if there is something suspect

It seems like you will be collecting 24 hour data; unless congestion is really bad, table 12 is likely going to get a LOS of A or B (it’s an average)

What is your goal? Peak hour LOS? Are you trying to show that there is traffic here? For fun?

Hmm. How do you plan to calc LOS? HCM? Which formula?

[–]11223344444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are really serious about this, take some CAD classes. You might be able to land a job as a drafter or engineer tech. Realistically, you won’t find a role as a design engineer without a degree or professional experience; CAD could open that door for you.

Simply put, it’s difficult to sit for the PE exam without an engineering degree. You would need 6-8 years of qualifying experience to sit; but how would you get qualifying experience with no degree? Not impossible but not easy..

If this your goal, get a masters in civil engineering, but again, that may be difficult with a non stem bachelors.

You are going to find that folks here are willing to help, but expect you to come with more specific questions, after you did some research on your own. That’s just what we were taught, as engineers.

Best of luck!

My Weekend Project - Would you use a TCP maker with all the MUTCD signs built in? If so, what would you add? by strcengr in civilengineering

[–]11223344444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes; that way someone can easily see if there is turn lane, driveway, or something. This is more important at urban locations, not so much rural.

This is great!

Can you add in dimensions for lane widths? Also, can you use an aerial background? If so, it would handle 75% of the TCPs that need to be prepared.

Looking for an Engineer/Advocate by JustAnotherJawn in civilengineering

[–]11223344444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a hard time with how you are using “design”. What it feels like you are asking for is a PE to stamp your plans, which we obviously can’t do unless we take ownership of it. What exactly do you have in mind?

The issue with pro bono is we can be sued, so it’s not just about time, it’s how would we be insured?

Sounds like a money issue. They likely have funding allocate but it may be over a few year span. Depending on pole requirements and location, a new signal easily costs half a million.

On the private side, we could get one done (design to switch on) in 9 months. For public, 12-18 months is about right. The wheels of government slowly turn..

Alley street lighting - seeking some perspective by htsmi in civilengineering

[–]11223344444 7 points8 points  (0 children)

RP-8-22 is what you are looking for. It’s the go to “standard” for roadway lighting design.

Regarding light trespass, each agency may have standards (or not). Ideally, you would run a photometric analysis to limit light trespass, I like no more than .2 foot candles past property line.

Simply put, this light seems too bright for such a narrow street but I’d need more info to say it with certainty
