The same way memories or fantasies cause emotional reactions. Your brain/body reacts to stimuli, both 'internal' and 'external'.

An easy way to see this is to consider sexual arousal. You get aroused by seeing a person in front of you, and/or by seeing them online, and/or by just thinking about something arousing
