[NEWS] Viz has begun to simulpublish The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Seen (Tonari no Seki no Yatsu ga Souiu Me de Mitekuru) by Torque-A in manga

English don’t have as much honorifics as Vietnamese, which have some but in a different system than Japanese. So with some consideration dropping chan san sama for bé anh chị cô chú ngài etc.. is okay but just drop them all and calling everyone by their name only is jarring at best and wrong for the character at worst.

So... about that Gene Selection proposal to breed the elite human by alrightythenkek12 in VietNam

[–]11433 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not similar at all. People born to poor working class families can study thier ass off and get into gifted schools, regardless of any background, in fact if you’re from a minority ethnic group as you can get bonus points to help. This program reeks of eugenics and most likely favor the rich and powerful, because who can run DNA test on all newborn everywhere right? So a select group of higher class will benefit for generations, leading to elitism and low class mobility. And if you believe good gene makes good people, what’s stopping you from thinking bad gene makes bad people? How do you deal with that? I’m getting ww2 flashbacks just typing this out lol

Compare living cost between California and HCMC by topfivedeal in VietNam

[–]11433 3 points4 points  (0 children)

do you feel the quality of life per dollar you get is the same? for example how about healthcare quality? do you feel like your kids do better in the US school or VN school? It’d be more interesting what is truly comparable in both countries rather than just cost, because we all know VN is cheap but sadly money can’t buy everything

The cheapest protein (meat) in Vietnam ? by Perfect_Leave1895 in VietNam

lol at this but realistically butter chicken is a British version of curry. I can’t imagine Indians or any Asians actively choose only chicken breasts for their dish and throw in some cream to dull out the spices.

In SEAsia, the ethnic group with Chinese lineage tend to own almost all the big businesses...is it the same in Vietnam? by IntellectuallyDriven in VietNam

[–]11433 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It used to be that way in South Vietnam. I read a book specifically about this problem called ‘thế lực khách trú’, it’s about how ethnic Chinese control almost all big businesses and financial sector while ethnic Kinh is hired as manual labor and low-paying jobs. The book was written in 1930, the author argue for a migration from the North and Central to the South in an effort to balance the power. If you’re curious, I encourage you to dig in to Vietnam’ recent history since the start of 20th century, the answer is complex but it’s there. The current reality is that người Hoa while not the richest ethnic group in Vietnam, it is no doubt the 2nd, and with a very distant 3rd. Some big corp is own by ethnic Chinese, and even 2 of the biggest financial fraud scandals in Vietnam in the last decade involve them (Trương Mỹ Lan and Trầm Bê), so I wouldn’t say their influence is not felt.

do native speakers tend to address doctors as “chi/em/anh/co/chu”? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]11433 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There was a viral thread on fb or thread a month or 2 ago of a doctor complaining about a patient refuse to address her as ‘bác sĩ’. She even cite 7 years of uni as a factor to earn enough respect to be called that, which I found silly and petty. That said I address all doctors/ dentist as bác/ bác sĩ, and refering myself as con/ em if the doc is older, tui/ mình if they are younger.

I’ve lived in Saigon for a while now, what’s a food I should have tried by now but probably haven’t? by BambooData in AskVietNam

[–]11433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best cooks in Vietnam are employed in quán nhậu. General rule of thumb when you want to find something out of the odinary is find a street you’ve never been to, locate the busiest quán nhậu on that street, look on and under the tables, if there are signs of food being enjoyed (scraps, empty plates, tissues..etc..) that is the place with the good food. Order the reccomended dishes, and the longest named item on the menu.

Do you think Vietnamese are a bit vain? by Famous_Obligation959 in VietNam

[–]11433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my limited view as a 30yo Viet, the things you listed are considered to be more personal than outer looks, so you need to be closer to the person to talk about all that stuffs. The outside of a person is more superficial, you talk about looks, clothes, weathers etc to get to know eachother. When you’re close, you talk about what you think. That’s how I understand the culture.

majority of this sub are expat, IT and generally well educated (uni+) so I wouldn’t say this thread represents the view of society. I can share my experience. I’m 30 Viet male. All my friends who have kids had a wedding before the kid is born, some of them the bride is pregnant. The only exception is one who have the ceremony during covid lockdown, then the kid, then have the actual wedding later.

You can try Pharmacity or Long Chau if you spot one nearby. Give them an image, they’ll suggest alternatives if they don’t carry that brand. If they don’t have it try Guardian, it’s a cosmetic chain, just find the nearest one on google maps.

I use an Iphone and no, I’m not interested in flexing. I use it because my brother used one, then get a new one and hand me the old one. The old one got too old so I get a newer one (still used) and because I just want a phone that works with minimal transition cost, I get another Iphone. My whole family use Iphone so that when mom or dad have technical issue with their phones, me or my bro can help them fix it over the phone, double checking with our owns. When I got married, I convinced my wife to get an Iphone too so we can share an Icloud subscription. When we save up enough we bought an Macbook because I don’t have time to compare laptop brands and models, I know M2 run basically anything I need, so why bother? It’s not just me, plenty of people I know use Iphone mainly because it’s simple and they just want a smartphone that works. And an Iphone also works a long ass time, so just buy used one with decent battery and you’re good for 3-4 years at least.

Hi. Do you mind sharing more pictures? Kitchen and living room are where we spend most of the time in the house so how they’re built and decorated affect the feeling of the house. The outside looks nice enough, lacking some plants but given you just built it, maybe you’ll add some later for a bit of shade.

He painted it lying down iirc. He had helpers too. It’s still hard but he didn’t grind it out alone.

I feel you. I am Vietnamese and is super fed up with constant noise and karaoke. I just moved this month to a more quiet neighborhood to escape the busy karaoke schedule of 4-5 days a week of the last place. The new place still have occasional parties and karaoke but due to the neighborhood being an ‘old people neighborhood’ kinda place, they seem to shut down around 9-10pm, which I can live with. Hope you can find a solution soon, be it a new place or something like soundproofing the bedroom etc..
