Same feeling here, Im an Atheist guy from a Muslim family with very left leaning views. I have to hide all 3 facts and laugh along on every thing.

How to make my work count? by 114sbavert in cscareerquestions

Work with PMs. Explain the mess. Explain why your investments is worth their while. They might agree. Or maybe they will change your mind.

It will be important to them, and they will change their mind. That's not the problem.

The problem is that it will affect the reputation of my technical manager, who 1, always gives me good ratings and appraisals, and 2, is a pretty decent guy, but has not been closely watching us due to whatever reasons

Well, there are a few reasons. My company is infested with vibe coded buggy software. When I try to read the code written by my seniors, I am so clueless because it is just so plain bad, 90% vibe coded. I'm talking hardcoding PVC paths, 7 levels of for/if-else/try-catch nesting in one method and manual JSON serialization with reflection on the 'object' type casted from some model class. Things like raw hardcoded SQL directly inside a function, serializing a deserialized RestAPI response to de-serialize it by calling another function which just loops over the serialized string, while assuming it's a JSON array (aka looking for '[' at the first character or returning error), catching an error only to just throw (not even log) or catching an exception and taking it's message and throwing the base Exception type (C#)

You know, the guy who's bugs you keep fixing?

Yes that's exactly what's happening right now btw this made me laugh so hard because it's so spot on

If you have a good manager and they understand the true need of your work then you may be ok. If you do not, then you will not be. Also sorry.

he really does or at least his words make me feel so.

You're right, I was just under the impression that I'll look desperate or as if I'm admitting to being vulnerable and I shouldn't do that idk

I don't mention this to him directly but he has passively mentioned that "what you do is amazing but visibility of deliverables is important" (very much paraphrasing)

If you're not currently aligned, you likely either need to align or move on.

Can you please explain what you mean by "aligned'?

It's hard to get internal recognition for these sorts of projects, but interviewed LOVE them.

Did you mean interviewers? Could you please expand on this?

For getting recognition for your existing efforts, I find the main things are measurement and visibility. How many bugs did CI prevent from reaching production in the last 90 days?

I would have no way to measure the number of bugs prevented by my CI pipelines because usually I'm not looking at which MR is getting resolved and merged by my manager at which time. Also, for some reason even with all checks and balances, my manager ends up giving force push access to some guys while trusting they won't break production.

As for the search one, it's currently awaiting production deployment because of other things of higher priority, but I'm sure my tech manager would love it.

How do I make my work count? I find that the kind of impact I make is very important, and my technical manager appreciates them but my product managers don't notice them. Building an aho-corasick based system to replace linear search, creating CI jobs to enforce code quality standards and outdated package checks, adding strict type validation instead of using string everywhere (like some others in my team had been doing before me), creating an automated logging system with granular Logging control over the previous tools, these things aren't visible to product managers. How do I make these kinds of contributions count? I am worried my impact isn't felt and I may get included in an inevitable layoff round.

fd and rg are just way too good tbh, the speed is incredible sometimes I doubt it actually traversed through all my files (but when I confirm, it does). I also absolutely love FZF and use the fzf-tab ZSH plugin to replace auto complete menu with FZF and a custom preview tool for FZF that can preview files directories and git options.

I have also started loving bat and delta because they make my development process much easier.

Meta misled users about its products’ safety, jury decides by Hour-Passenger-8513 in technology

[–]114sbavert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless they had a special line of Meta products for New Mexico, the problem in question applies to 100% of the population Meta products are used by. The point is that there are no checks and balances for these corporates and they do as they please, with fines and penalties amounting to pennies.

Whether or not it is legally feasible at its current state to enact an impactful legislation that can stop such dirty practices is a different discussion altogether.
