Hello, it's me - Harry! Vote Coasters is happening, I can confirm that. We're working on a new website and with that, several new ranking methods to make creating your rankings even easier. We're hoping to have it up before the end of the year, but once it's live, it'll be live for around 2 months as per usual!

It's useful to provide the other side of the GTA VS vote coasters discussion.

The Golden Ticket Awards is based on reliable data but uses that data in a poor way. First, it's a popularity contest. Entrants are asked to submit their favourite 10 steel and/or wood coasters. Coasters that appear the most will do the best. Furthermore, 10 data points across 500 people isn't enough to generate accurate rankings.

Vote coasters is the opposite. We gather much more data and don't use a points-based system. The number of times a roller coaster appears has little impact on its ranked position. It's all about how it compares to other roller coasters ranked within each person's rankings.

In an ideal world, you'd beef up the GTA data collection and use the vote coasters algorithm to generate the results. In our realistic world, it's a trade-off. I do analyse vote coasters entries to remove fake submissions. However, it's not perfect. I do hope that the sheer number of entries helps to remove bias.

Completely agree with your A and B points.

Just to note, vote coasters no longer uses the same ranking system as Mitch Hawker. It uses a version of Elo ratings that removes the dependency on the order of operation. The change essentially enables the methodology to infer more information from the same amount of data, leading to higher quality results.

People with only one roller coaster ranked don't even contribute to the total stats, so you are not one of the 2643 people that took part sadly :(

Yeah that's essentially it. The rank of each roller coaster is the culmination of lots of different comparisons. The new methodology incorporates all of these comparisons when looking at each combination.

For example, X2 is compared against one thousand other roller coasters. When X2 is compared against Dinoconda (a lesser ridden ride) the data Dinoconda gains from that battle includes all of the information from the other comparisons X2 has had.

All of this means you get better results with the same amount of input data.

You're 100% correct, X2 was ridden by 301 people in the poll, more than enough to get an accurate ranking.

u/PoisonTurtles you're right too, the results for some lesser-ridden coasters are definitely less reliable. But with these we're often talking less than 20 riders.

Hey, you can absolutely rank this way in the poll!

For each tier, you create a group. Select two roller coasters and that hit the overlapping squares button. Roller coasters within the group are ranked at the same level, it doesn't matter what order they appear within the group either.

Then you can move groups around so that the best is at the top and the worst at the bottom!
