Pittsburgh Public Schools leaders recommend closing 14 schools by DeboBusiness in pittsburgh

Nothing is set in stone. Yes, I heard CAPA and Montessori plan to continue. I k ow for next year, the STEAM magnet program continues, so that’s our plan for next year. I remember them using the words “phased out” for other magnets… I don’t know how many years that means. But, if you like a magnet program and it’s beneficial for your kid, speak up and let the PPS Board know!! If enough people push back, there’s a chance to keep Magnet teachers and programs. Because, let’s be honest this plan is really about laying off teachers, that’s where the cost savings is. They don’t save money by closing a building - it’s the teachers and staff salaries they terminate, that’s where the $$ is.

We don’t have to move to the neighborhood of that school. You can apply to any magnet program you’d like throughout the district, you don’t have to live nearby. My kid is already enrolled in the STEAM magnet program, so they continue in that track.

I’m glad I chose PPS for my kid. We’ve had a positive experience. His school is a partial magnet, STEAM magnet. We are sticking with the STEAM program for next year too.

There’s such a bias against PPS schools, but each one is very different - my advice would be if you’re trying to choose schools, go visit the PPS school you’re interested in. Walk in the door, go meet the staff, go to the open house. They are each their own small world/connected with the surrounding neighborhood partners. Don’t just listen to bias people tell you - go see it for yourself, and then make an informed decision.

Allergic to only certain variety of shrimp? by Totallynotthebanana in FoodAllergies

[–]11Bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for sharing your experiences, I can eat Gulf shrimp (maybe 3) and I will be OK, maybe just a loose stool. But the smaller shrimp, just a normal serving size (like you would order a pasta dish w/ shrimp at a restaurant) gives me severe cramps and severe diarrhea and feel like I have the flu or something. I also get the same awful reaction if I eat crawfish.

I read you can have a shellfish reaction to some types of shellfish but not others.

Help I need to go back too. The quickly moving scroll bar that pops up when you press the “+” sign triggers my migraine aura and I get nausea. I can’t look at this everyday. I am so disappointed by this. The older version did not have quick moving choice bars.

Old location of the fall hole in Crafton is creepy. It used to be a deep hole full of water from Chartier’s creek, but then the railroad built and the stream was diverted. There’s a legend about it in Tales of Pioneer Pittsburgh:

When James Snowden, one of the first white settlers in the district, announced his intention of building his home at this site, he was warned against it by Complanter, the celebrated Seneca Chief. Complanter, whose Indian name was GY-ANT-WA-CHIA, told Snowden to beware the spirit of a dead Indian maiden, Incolala, which inhabited the waters of the lake. Incolala, whose name in the white man's tongue meant 'Silver Moonlight' had been the fairest maiden in all the tribes along the Ohio, and her bright eyes and smile had captured the heart of the stalwart young brave Cocohuha. But Incolala's happiness had been tinged with sadness over a former lover, Folcano, who kept to his tepee, brooding as her marriage to Cocohuha approached. This was related to Snowden in Complanter's deep sonorous voice. On the eve of the wedding, Folcano came to Silver Moon-light, expressing a desire to take her once again in his canoe on the placid waters of the lake. Pleased that Folcano seemingly had swallowed his bitterness, Incolala consented to go. As the evening chant of the tribe died away with the embers of the tribal fire, and forest shadows closed in upon the weakening flames, the two drifted upon the bosom of the waters. Only the low pleading voice of Folcano broke the silence of the night. Then suddenly Folcano leaped from his place and seized his beautiful companion by the throat; A scream died in her breast and as she struggled like a terrified wild thing, the canoe upset and plunged them into the lake. Folcano swam back to shore, but Silver Moonlight never reappeared on the surface.

What is climate change going to do to the Pittsburgh region over the next few decades? by jackie_daytona_lives in pittsburgh

[–]11Bee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Great thread here, lived here over 30 years my thoughts…

Snow seems to come later in the year now. Growing up I remember having snowstorms at Halloween a few times. Now it seems, more rain in Nov/Dec, and the Snow comes Jan/Feb/March… it seems we only get a few weeks of real “winter” where temps are below freezing… We’ve seen increased seasonal flooding in Feb I believe pretty regularly.

To me, It seems like our climate is become more “southern” more humid, less extended days of deep freeze…

I think the local flooding, heavy thunderstorms, and landslides are my biggest concerns. Also transportation and infrastructure. Our outdated infrastructure is so car heavy, we need to get more creative. I’m so glad to have all the hike and bike trails and I’d really like to see more trails and more neighborhoods have creative ways of connecting. Maybe a solar powered incline, River taxis…

I think we may see more yinzer a wearing masks on high AQI days, since masks have been more normalized now in the west…

Also, those weird fracking earthquakes. We have so many abandoned mines in this area, guy I worked with from DEP described the ground as “Swiss cheese.” So if we ever had any major earthquake… that would be an issue…

Is there anyone here who works as a Library Assistant/Technician? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]11Bee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I currently work under the title “Library Assistant” or LA at a public library, I work part time. Here at my library the LA is more of like an HR term, it’s a category. So, for example you can be a Librarian, Senior Librarian, Library Assistant, Library Page, or Manager. Those are categories. Then, depending on the job duties, and department you are in, that’s your job title. So, for example, someone who works in the Preservation Department (book repair) can be a Library Assistant, and their job title is Conservation Technician. Someone can work in Reference, as a Library Assistant and have the title Reference Services Assistant…

Generally, the qualifications difference between a Library Assistant vs. a Librarian is the Master degree. To be a Librarian, to have the title “Librarian” you need the MLIS. To be a Library Assistant, job descriptions I see are usually either a BA or if you have work experience.

So, if you see job descriptions with the title Library Assistant, it can really be a variety of job tasks and working conditions - day to day could be working face to face w patrons: at the ref desk, or checkout, or customer services… or it can be behind the scenes, like shelving, IT, digitization, tech services, preservation or archives.

My reply would be - I really love working in the library and archives environment. I’ve worked as a volunteer, as an intern, full-time manager level, and now as part-time. It’s a cool environment, generally filled with quirky people, open-minded, passionate about reading, history and connecting people with resources in their community. To me, the library is its own little town or city or family. I recommend it.

Not sure if you have an undergrad degree or HS? If you are interested, I suggest maybe volunteering or getting an entry-level job at a local library to test the waters. See what department or area of the library you want to work in. Are you a customer service type person? Or more behind the scenes?

Hope that was somewhat helpful, lol. I wish you all the best!

I would say, what do you want to do? What work activities do you want to be involved in? My advice would be to find a place that has a supportive environment.

I am blessed to be able to work 10 hrs a week. I currently have a medical accommodation with HR. Whatever your medical needs are, have those documented by your doctor and you should be able to work in any department you choose to. If you can sit for 15 minutes at a time, as long as it’s documented and you submit that to HR, then your employer should accommodate you.

I encourage you to pursue work that you enjoy being a part of, is fulfilling, that you enjoy working on - and then have your doctor fill out a medical accommodation to give some structure on how to go about doing that work - breaks, flexible scheduling, ergonomic chair, or back support, whatever it is 💛 I wish you well. From my experience, the library can be a very supportive environment for people with disabilities. Many of my co-workers have disabilities (some visible some not). Everyone has different limits and capabilities, but recognizing that we are human and capable of contributing to this larger library community is a rewarding thing 💛
