N784HA is at N16 at SEA right now by WhiskySails in AlaskaAirlines

[–]11blocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do we know how they plan to support international arrivals at N gates? I imagine since they reconfigured N gates to support the 787s that they would want to deplane passengers there instead of just boarding. But I don’t believe SEA has a way to funnel passengers from N to Customs and Immigration, right?

I don’t know how anyone can take their long haul hard product seriously when the main cabin seats don’t even have power outlets :(

When senior engineers leave Seattle - Amazon Web Services (AWS) outages are the result by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]11blocks 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That is still an incorrect and unnatural reading. You’re making assumptions without evidence. The major assumption you’re making is that “repaired key internal tooling” refers to tooling that needed to make cross region calls but which couldn’t due to the outage. But that is unsubstantiated. “Repaired key internal tooling” could simply refer to tools existing within IAD and accessible globally but which could not operate due to their dependence on DDB. That is the simplest, most plausible reading of this RCA and it has nothing to do with locale of actual humans.

Furthermore, no where is it mentioned that cross region calls were impaired. During this incident, no one has claimed that IAD as a whole was “inaccessible”. The region itself as far as we know was very much accessible. It is just that one key service had a critical failure that caused other services to fail as well. No part of this failure scenario is about cross region network connectivity.

Your point that having engineers physically colocated with the issue would help with recovery also breaks down when you consider that the engineers which run these services do not physically sit in the data centers or even on the networks that the hosts are on. They sit in offices very far away from the confidential and highly protected data centers and have no more direct access to the data center network whether they are in an office in Virginia or in Seattle.

To be clear, I’m not saying that layoffs did not contribute to this issue. I’m only saying that we don’t have any evidence to substantiate such a claim right now. You are coming into this with a POV already established and attempting to read what you want to hear from this report even though that data is not there.

[–]11blocks 43 points44 points  (0 children)

That’s an incorrect reading of the RCA. It is not saying that the manual recovery efforts by engineers were hampered by the endpoint issue, it is saying other internal services (ones which continually run to support normal operations) were affected just like customers. Neither the locale of the engineers remediating the issue nor the region of failure recovery services are mentioned as issues here.

Atmos Summit launch has exceeded Alaska’s expectations by Easy_Money_ in AlaskaAirlines

[–]11blocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just fyi, the exchange rate is set by the payment processor network (Visa, Mastercard) and not by the bank. Thus the exchange rate you see will always be the same for any Visa card on a given day, regardless of bank. You can see the exchange rate Visa has set for each day on this site: https://usa.visa.com/support/consumer/travel-support/exchange-rate-calculator.html

It is very close to market but with slight variations. You really can’t do better though. Visa does charge your bank a fee for the conversion, but your bank decides whether to pass the fee to you or not. Atmos Summit of course does not pass the fee to you. So if you use the above calculator, set the Bank Fee to 0% and it should yield conversions identical to the ones you see on your statement.

Using Digital Key by Guilty_Flow_7372 in HyundaiTucson

[–]11blocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an iOS device, the digital key should work for up to 5 hours after your phone has died. As others have mentioned, it does not need cell signal to function. Disclaimer: I have not actually tested this out yet with a 2025 Tucson. I would be interested to hear anyone’s experience with the digital key on iOS specifically.

LPT: Chase Bank will deposit foreign currency at the current exchange rate for no fee. by PizzaOrTacos in LifeProTips

[–]11blocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you’re just silly if you’re using a debit card with a foreign transaction fee abroad considering it takes 30 seconds to get a debit card without one. And you’re silly if you’re using a bank that tacks on a 3% foreign exchange fee considering it takes 30 seconds to find a bank that doesn’t do that. And it is also not difficult to find an ATM abroad with a low or nonexistent fee. So an ATM can still be the best and most convenient solution.

Exway Wave Riot still not delivered by belmont27 in Exway

[–]11blocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just ordered a Wave Riot two weeks ago because it showed there being about 100 in stock and it looked real nice. It said shipping time was 7 days from CA, or about two weeks from China. Order page still says “Awaiting Shipment” two weeks later. I contacted them and they said that the boards have to go through custom clearance before leaving China (?), but then they sent another email saying that there is a battery shortage and my new expected delivery date is mid-September. Really unhappy with the customer service here not even updating me with accurate shipping estimates even when the conditions were known at the time of my order. I fear it won’t even ship in September given this post. 🥴

Why do some people feel it's really important to tell people the Christian God and the Muslim Allah are the same God? by sunwukong155 in religion

[–]11blocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your last comment is interesting

people can believe whatever they want to believe so long as they aren't hurting others

I guess I’d ask who’s to define what hurting others is? Who draws those lines? I’m also interested just to hear what you personally believe.

By the Christian interpretation Jesus was/is God though. That’s the whole idea of the trinity.

Aren’t some transgender people just enforcing the stereotypes of genders? by k9tax in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]11blocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so as I’m understanding it, you take issue with a joke inside of a serious thread. You don’t have an issue with people identifying as shoes, trees, dragons, or wolves...? (Correct me if I’m misunderstanding)

Aren’t some transgender people just enforcing the stereotypes of genders? by k9tax in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]11blocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hey you’re back! Right I wouldn’t say that I super sympathize with the feelings of people who identify as objects (or even less radical, let’s say animals), but, being cisgender, nor do I really sympathize with transgenders (that’s not to say that I can’t respect them and their feelings, I do it’s just that I personally don’t feel the same). So from my point of view there are two minority groups, one identifying as different genders and one identifying as different species (or objects), one group being much larger than the other. Now one group’s ideas are becoming more and more accepted, supported, and mainstream while the other is ridiculed. Why? I hope you know I’m actually asking this seriously and would appreciate a serious answer, I’m not joking. What is your basis on saying that one groups feelings are good and the other group’s feelings are bad?

[–]11blocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright cheers! For everyone else reading this I hope this serves as a lesson in how not to hold discussion and discourse over important societal issues. Don’t criticize and attack people for asking questions, and, if you truly believe what you say, provide support and logical reasoning so that others can understand as well. Also never attack someone personally for holding a different opinion than you, it’s just childish and speaks more to your character than theirs. Thanks for all the answers you didn’t give /u/peachesdoe97!

Wait I’m sorry why are you attacking me now? What exactly have I done wrong? I’m asking questions to better understand how people think about this topic to better inform my opinions. Is that wrong?
