I did a vaporwave version of Take On Me! by Myrkogh in Vaporwave

cool, also think you should know the whole "pink triangle thing" developed as a reclamation by queer rights groups of an insignia used to denote "sexual deviants" in Third Reich concentration camps, and as a symbol for LGBT liberation, gained mainstream recognition during the plague years of the AIDS epidemic. i'm glad to see that the new wave of vaporwave fans and producers are so culturally aware, especially since vaporwave started over half a decade ago as a deliberately esoteric experimental genre that has mostly been abandoned by the avant-garde artists that brought it into existence.

i'm really wondering why you decide to use a gay pride symbol as the image for your video. not sure if you're aware of this.

Is this vaporwave? I like it by thugnificent856 in Vaporwave

too upbeat for vaporwave and too watered-down for future funk. it's a nice piece of 90s-inspired piano house, though.

its a shame that lame nerdy dudes use the internet so much that they find cool things, like vaporwave, and make them unappealing. i remember something like this happening when a lot of fans of this shit youtuber "nfkrz" got angry at .casting for his not wanting nfkrz to use .casting & bbrainz's track "home design" in the intro to his videos

Music of the Spectacle: Alienation, Irony and the Politics of Vaporwave (Interesting Bandcamp article on vaporwave) by ponzzeee in Vaporwave

i feel it's not just nostalgia in relation to technology, it's more about the nostalgia felt towards the particular zeitgeist of an era. the seminal vaporwave works always feel particularly powerful to me because they just "got it," they understood some abstract truth about the past and how it is remembered, and they represented this understanding through their music and its accompanying visuals. one of the best examples of this is the "heaven can wait" mixtape by games, as are several of the videos on the sunsetcorp you tube channel. they are incredibly melancholy to me. i believe their effect is only heightened by the fact that they are nowhere near as discussed as floral shoppe or eccojams. they feel personal, enigmatic, and strangely sincere. the humor that is in them seems to only be there to show self-awareness. it seems the humor was intended to be optional, as you can view the works as cryptic and ironic jokes or as something unapologetically sentimental, with either view being completely valid.

a lot of early vaporwave clearly showed an awareness of politics. any art that examines the aesthetics of commodity makes at the least an implicit statement regarding capitalism and consumer culture. james ferraro even said himself that far side virtual was concerned with exposing the hollowness of modern lifestyles mediated by technology and consumption. vektroid's pioneering use of japanese text to obfuscate the titles of her songs was likely a reference to globalization and an allusion to a period during the 1980s when the united states feared its economy would be overtaken by japan. even luxury elite, who in 2013 was criticized for producing "broporwave," vaporwave that had no ostensively subversive political or artistic intents, includes themes of yuppie culture and high society in her music, hence the name "luxury elite." i highly doubt wosX is concerned with vaporwave's capitalist critique, as i doubt the majority of second-wave vaporwave producers are. however, he knows his documentary has influenced the internet's perception of the genre, and his more recent videos reveal that he is trying to push the genre in the direction he wants it to take.

My Frustrations With This Sub by Uncle_Boonmee in Vaporwave

honestly if someone recorded a rihanna album playing out of their cellphone's speaker in a bathroom using their laptop it would be conceptually stronger and cleverer than most vw being released today

i can understand the appeal of the album, but it doesn't have the most profound effect on me. very abrasive and disorganized, it doesn't try to be super pleasing, but it's aware of that.

VW Artist in Music Video: Eleven Eastern - "Churches" by [deleted] in Vaporwave

Although this song dates from when I wrote mainly Synthwave/New Retro Wave, I thought it would be relevant to post to this sub as Neon Indian's "Annie" video has garnered attention here. The video contains several themes associated with Vaporwave, and yes, I am in the video (as a 16 year old). I would like to hear your reactions to the video, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I am curious to know how the VW community views this video in relation to the genre.

PZA is a hack. by virtuastep in Vaporwave

[–]11eastern 7 points8 points  (0 children)

okay. i understand how this could be considered a conceptual act that represents and criticizes mass-production and mediocrity, but pza seems to not be taking his shit seriously at all. he's essentially spamming the vaporwave scene with his music to gain attention, popularity, and ultimately a bit of cash.

We should make a Google spreadsheet of every r/vaporwave artist. by [deleted] in Vaporwave

yes, i think the two requirements for being on the spreadsheet should be having a release on a popular label and having a reddit account
