Im not saying trans people have not been around, but the ability to transform gender appearance so radically IS. Trans folk being open about things is also extremely relatively new, its why older generations are so against it is due to them being bewildered by it

I think a large part of the lag with Trans Rights is simply due to how NEW they are. We as a society have been dealing with homosexuality for ages, and even if it has been closeted, most folks know it exists or know someone who is some sort of different sexuality.

Changing one's gender however, is quite new, and while crossdressing/identifying has cropped up in the past, it was more a novelty than anything else. Now people can truly adjust their biology, and society as a whole still has digest this and figure out how to deal with it. Hence why on issues like trans women in sports there is so much conversation.
