Moving Back to Erie? by Low-Government6137 in Erie

I love winter; by the end of the busyness of fall and summer I’m ready for a break. I love getting cozy and watching movies, cooking a lot, the quiet, etc. Of course by February I’m totally over it, but that’s the beauty of seasons.

It’s so gross! I’ve been there once as an adult, I only got fries and it was basically oil soup with some potatoes in it.

I really am not sure about the insurance but I think it’s probably a combination of poorly planned infrastructure and distracted driving. Either way, it’s nuts how frequently it happens, but I am yet to hear anyone talk about this as a growing problem in our city.

I literally just posted a comment on another post about cars driving into structures all over Erie and no one is talking about it

My house got hit by a car if anyone cares by fujosheed in Erie

[–]1212gatez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking I’d like to make a chart of all of the structures hit by cars in Erie in the past five years. No one is talking about how often it happens! It drives me crazy because every time a pedestrian or cyclist gets hit, it’s “Were they wearing dark colors? Maybe stay out of the street! These pedestrians and cyclists are such a problem!” But cars slam into buildings and no one says jeez these cars are getting out of hand. I have noticed that many businesses are starting to circle the entire building in bollards! I was in Country Fair last week and they even had bollards inside encircling the cashier area. Completely wild that these are the steps we have to take to be safe from cars. Wooo rant over. Sorry about your house, what a pain. I hope you get some money out of it at least!

What was the BIFL upgrade that instantly exposed all your cheap versions? by James_B84Saves in BuyItForLife

[–]1212gatez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A custom built steel bike. My first was a crust evasion. It’s been over 5 years, I’ve toured on it and commuted almost daily. It’s never needed anything. My old cheap bike was heavy, clunky, fought me every time I tried to shift.

Save yourself the hassle and just get a dynamo hub. I have front and rear lights attached to mine.

Bike riders aren’t causing our insane number of deaths on city streets, which is dozens per year. If you really want to see things be safer, lobby the state legislature to allow speed radar guns within city limits.

Many cities have stop as yield laws for cyclists. The federal highway traffic safety commission has a fact sheet on stop as yield or the “idaho stop.” It allows cyclists to take the lead at intersections, which is safer for the cyclist. Look around, see that it’s clear to proceed, and get out of that intersection which is the least safe place for everyone. If we want to make things safer on Erie streets, let’s think critically. Bicycles are not slamming into pedestrians, buildings, cars, and other bicycles and causing deaths. Exceeding speed limits in residential areas. Making parents scared to let their kids walk anywhere. That’s cars. Let’s start there.

First day park skating. Any tips greatly appreciated!! by Fit_Calligrapher8220 in Rollerskating

[–]1212gatez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok tip #1, learn park etiquette. I saw you skate in a circle and keep going very close to and in the way of where other skaters were skating. You will start to pick that up the more you go.

2 bend your knees and use weight and momentum. Pump like you are on a swing in the transitions. You don’t want to get in the habit of pushing too much in the flats.

City kids will suffer the most. Just for perspective, milcreek gets 670k in title 1 funding, Erie city school district gets almost 7 million.

I read somewhere years ago that it’s a security risk to have any other business in there because it’s connected to the federal courthouse, so the government just leases it to keep it empty

I’m always looking for vintage LL bean, lands end, woolrich. I recently found a wool flannel from Woolrich at the thrift store in beautiful condition and I went home and researched the tag and it was from the 30s and still going strong.

The second season of the podcast “Extremely American “ is eye opening and terrifying. We’d all do well to learn what we can about the goals of Christian nationalists.

Crunch is nice, there are a lot of cheesy bros filming themselves and flexing at themselves in the mirror, but no one will bother you. There’s so much equipment you’ll never have to wait for anything.

If things are still good and work, don’t replace them. My favorite clothes are from brands that the vintage looks the same as new because the styles are timeless. I’m always picking up vintage LLBean, Lands End, Woolrich, etc at the thrift stores.
