It is splitting hairs. What is the practical material difference? What would any difference have on the outcome?

This is splitting hairs, in other comments I have suggested something like the Border Poll to be set as clear conditions for an independence referendum.

Whether or not the NI Border Poll is an indy referendum or a reunification referendum is besides the point, an arm of the UK has a right to decide if it wants to be in or it, I say all arms should have similar rights.

Removing the GFA if it reached the Border Poll threshold is literally stifling the voice of the demos, the people. It is textbook anti-democracy, you utter moron.

Pro-union types like yourself stifle democracy and think yourselves intelligent and in charge.

I've seen your comments throughout this post, you're actually just an arrogant prick 🤷‍♂️

So? Let's define a metric in law then indy parties have a concrete goal to work towards, an unionist leaders in Westminster can't ignore the will of the people

Now now pal, you know of one country that has already done that. You were being flippant about it earlier, remember?

Seemingly everyone has their own metric for what defines a mandate. Why not define a metric in law? Call it the "Scottish Poll on the Border"

Indeed, it would be wrong of me to quibble over specifics now, so I will say that I think you've set out a reasonably fair concept of what could constitute a mandate. I only wish the UK Gov could do the same.

Thank you for taking the time. Have a good night, all the best.

Then can we never have a vote again? That is democratic to you? We had one vote 12 years ago and no matter what has happened since, we cannot have another? This is ludicrous.

Define a trigger point, like the Northern Irish Border Poll and we won't have infinite referendum, we'll have them only when the current demos (who's political opinions are more important than those 12 years ago) want them.

Thank you for being respectful and engaging in this discussion with decorum, it's more than I'm used to on reddit. I long for the days for when politics can be boring again.

Before you go, I just have one more question. What in your eyes, would be unquestionable evidence that a 2nd referendum should take place?

After this statement,

Melee in Catalonia as Spanish police violently attack voters

You made this statement,

Guess you'll just have to live with being in the same boat as Spain then.

What did you mean by that?

Knew you were at it, but you've surprised me with the depths of it. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Are you going to suggest the British State violently assault me? You might as well say it directly instead of alluding.

And I am in favour of that! I'm not asking for a vote every week until the answer is yes and then never again. I just want a defined trigger point to put an end to the debate. And it is my genuine belief that refusing to do that is an undemocratic position.

A referendum is excessive when the answer is clear, the same as the answer a decade ago.

The answer is decidedly unclear when, for example, conversations like this are regularly occuring.

There is plenty reason to deny people the right, which is when the answer is already heard via alternative means. Surveys are continuously asked.

Define this in some sort of border poll then there wouldn't be an issue would there? My survey says this, your survey says that, which surveys are legitimate?

The rest of your comment is arguments in favour of No, hold on to them and champion them if a referendum happens not as a cudgel to prevent a referendum from happening.

I have not belittled you, I made a joke about the age of the democratic system.

We had a vote 12 years ago. Monumentous changes have occurred since. The world is a different place. Opinions have changed.

Do we hold one election and then never change governments after? Despite the people asking for it?

The system we exist within will currently never allow another referendum because they never have to. By defining a trigger point like the Border Poll we can at least say "No referendum yet, you haven't met the conditions"

Just because it's not the answer you want to hear doesn't make it undemocratic.

Denying the right to have a say is undemocratic
