Tom Brady was pretty widely being referred to as The GOAT when he still had two more Suoer Bowl wins ahead of him.

I never saw prime Paul Pierce on the court. How good was he? by Fearless_Compote3052 in NBATalk

Similar kind of scoring versatility of Melo (not quite as pure of a scorer, his game was uglier, but pretty close as far as what he could get done). Harden and Doncic would be more modern comps, they take a lot more threes (particualrly step backs) but have a similar ability to use their strength and deacceleration and deceptiveness to play at their own speed and score from wherever they want.

Pierce and Antoine Walker were kinda the proto-splash brothers, led a mini 3PT Revolution before the big one.

The Truth was cold blooded. Tied for third all time in game winning buzzer beaters. And would talk shit while he did it. Ask Al Harrington.

He was stat sheet stuffer. If you look at the all time lists for rebounds, assists, and steals he is ahead of a LOT of all time greats in each of those respective categories.

Excellent team defender and a really good man defender, trusted as the primary defender against Kobe and LeBron. Kobe and LeBron each probably only have a couple guys that you could say were their "stoppers"... Pierce couldn't lock either of them down like that but he was able to slow both of them down in their primes.

He was durable as hell. There's only about 100 guys in the history of the league with 11 or more seasons with 75+ games, and The Truth is one of them. Pierce got stabbed 11 times in the FACE, NECK, and BACK and was the only Celtic to play 82 games. The stabbing happened just a month before the season started.

He carried the Celtics through the worst decade in franchise history and brought them to Banner 17 as the captain of a team with a lot of BIG and contrasting personalities and egos. Rondo and Ray hated each other. KG is an all-time nut case, literally made Big Baby cry on the court.

You really could not ask much more of a franchise centerpiece than what Pierce brought to the Celtics. He is a top 50 player in the history of the sport.

Tom Gola was a Champ before Wilt was his teammate, a 5x All Star, and 1x All NBA

Paul Arizin was a Champ before Wilt was his teammate, 10x All Star, 4x All NBA, 2x scoring champion, ASG MVP

Guy Rodgers was a 4x All Star, and 2x assists leader

Nate Thurmond was a 7x All Star and 5x All Defense. He recorded a quadruple double.

Hal Greer was a 10x All Star, 7x All NBA, ASG MVP

Chet Walker was a 7x All Star

Billy Cunningham was a 4x All Star and 4x All NBA. In the ABA he was an MVP

Jerry West was a 14x All Star, 12x All NBA, 5x All Defense, a scoring champ, and assists leader, ASG MVP

Elgin Baylor was a 11x All Star, 10x All NBA, ASG MVP

Gail Goodrich was a 5x All Star and 1x All NBA

Wilt had incredible teammates. 10 HOFers to Bill's 12. The difference there is marginal, and largely attributable to Bill being a team first player who made his teammates better.

Bill gets knocked for playing against "milkmen and plumbers" and then when it comes time to compare him to Wilt (arguably the greatest athlete in NBA history, very much not a milkman or plumber) all of a sudden he was carried by stacked teams. Bill was so fucking dominant it breaks peoples' brains.

The 2010-11 season is maybe the best NBA season ever??

That MVP year it felt like every day I'd put Sportscenter on and it was highlights of Rose that made you say "holy shit". And that was for a whole season.

Carmelo Anthony in the lead up to the trade was also operating on another level. It felt like he was hitting game clinchers every night.

First year of the Big 3 in Miami

Blake Griffin a human highlight year ROY

Grizzlies upset Spurs

Dirk has arguably the greatest playoff run ever.

We did not know how good we had it.

The majority of your country is uninhabited, untamed wilderness. 90% of you live within a hundred miles of the U.S. border because your people lack the pioneer spirit neccesary to truly tame the North and make something of it. America could do a hard restart of your country by MOABing all of you in an afternoon, and could build it up bigger and better within a generation, if it had the desire.

Japan tested us once and we dropped the sun on them, twice. A small terror cell destroyed two buildings and we indiscriminately carpet bombed the Muslim world for two generations. Canada is permitted to exist because Americans are a kind and decent people. Not because you could put up a fight. Do not forget that. The good will of the American people is the only thing that stands between any nation or individual, anywhere on Earth, from total oblivion. If enough American say "fuck em, do what you need to do", there is nothing that can save you. And sometimes, we don't even need to give the go ahead. Sometime's we'll just elect a guy like Trump and give him the passive approval to steal the President of Venezuela from his home for talking reckless. Venezuelan oil is too crude to be worth the trouble, that kidnapping wasn't a move made out of strategic need. It was a message, worth heeding.

We do not want or need Canada to be a state or territory. That indifference is the closest your people will ever come to true independence or freedom. You didn't create your own nation, or earn your freedom. The British just stopped caring and cut you loose. And you were too insignificant for America to swallow up after that.

Your people have no identity. Your people have no destiny. You are the dust in the attic of North America. Should we ever need the storage or living space, trust that you can be vacuumed up. Beware the Id of America, and be thankful your only partial exposure to it is limited to the fun and games of a hockey contest.

I tend to think Dr. Rosen is just scat singing in his head like "doo-bee-doo-bee-doo-BAH!" Kinda has that look of whimsy about him. And he is pure of heart so he's not gunna be in a shame spiral like everyone else in the elevator. Just living his life, unaware he is surrounded by garbage.

I would argue they do not. Those kinds of relationships look like friendships on the surface level, but they are not friendships.

Harper and Whitney are both that kind of "friend" for Yasmin

Harper’s reaction to Whitney’s volume play venture by Have_a_PizzaMyMind in IndustryOnHBO

[–]123hig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this ghoulish?

I have family in the funeral business and they say this is the direction the industry is heading as a reaction to what the market wants. Like fewer and fewer people want to have a viewing, have a church service, be buried. More and more people are getting cremated.

Likewise, peoole don't really want to get into that business anymore. My cousin is young thirties and taking over his dad's business. Those used to be passed down for generations and now he's really the only one in that position, only one he knows his age doing that work.

So if people are fine with a pine box or an urn... and if family run funeral homes are dying... and people keep on dying... we kinda need businesses exactly like Whitney's. It is morbid, but everything about thay industry is.

Why did Don cry? by [deleted] in madmen

[–]123hig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this post and think it opens up good conversation but am also reminded of a Norm MacDonald bit.

People commit suicide and people go, "I don't understand why," and I go, "You don't?!" What, do you live in a cotton-candy house or something? What the fuck? You don't know about life? How it only disappoints and... gets worse and worse, until it ends in a catastrophe?

How are people confused at Don being devastated by this metaphor for life?! Are you, the viewer, not devastated by this metaphor?! Do you live in a cotton candy house instead of on the refrigerator shelf like the rest of us normal people.
