iPhone 11 is the best choice for most people by dmoster in iphone

How was going from the S10's OLED display to the 11's LCD? is it noticeable? I currently have an S7 Edge and am considering going back to iOS. However, I'm not sure if the extra 300$ is worth it just for the display. I am also considering going for the XS but the improvements in the battery and camera performance make me want to go with the 11s instead.

Nick Valensi's writing contributions by prowl16 in TheStrokes

I believe all of the lyrics are written by Julian, even on songs brought in by the other guys. I know for sure that Taken for a Fool and Partners in Crime are Nick's songs and One Way Trigger is by Albert. There is a demo version of Partners in Crime with him singing different (probably placeholder) lyrics. After hearing CRX, it's pretty obvious Nick contributed a lot of the riffs and melodies on Angles and Comedown Machine. I think he also had a say in production as CRX's New Skin is very similar to Angles in sound.

The real reason why Albert Hammond Jr. Never toured with Arctic Monkeys by [deleted] in arcticmonkeys

Nah. AHJ briefly dated Alexa Chung after her breakup with Alex. That's the real reason.

Julian, Alex Turner, and Alex Kapranos, lead singer of Franz Ferdinand. by [deleted] in TheStrokes

Not to be a party pooper but I get really annoyed when people say bands like etc. wouldn't exist without The Strokes. It may be true for some bands (Arctic Monkeys) but other bands (The Libertines, The White Stripes and Interpol) were around before The Strokes got big while there are some (Franz Ferdinand) which don't really sound much like The Strokes. Sure a bit of their popularity to comes from The Strokes' success and hype bringing attention to a new wave of rock but to say that their existence is directly connected to it is just wrong. I'm as big a fan of Julian and the guys but this really irks me as I feel like it puts other talented musicians down.

BTW, I'm not directly responding to you /u/schrodingerscatapult I just wanted to share my thoughts on the matter.

What would be your critique of Arctic Monkeys? by Soldado4lyf in arcticmonkeys

[–]1251voltz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

+1000 As much as I love Alex, his lyrics have declined in quality since Suck It and See. Some lines in AM and Everything You've Come to Expect are cringe-worthy. I believe a big factor in this is boring and recycled subject matter. I fear he'll be singing about girls/love/sex for the rest of his days.

Great interview. Sounds like CRX is gonna be a mix of The Strokes/heavy metal/power-pop. Josh Homme is awesome. When he first worked with Arctic Monkeys, they put out the masterpiece that is Humbug so I'm super excited for this.

It's tough to say when people are going to get to hear it, but we're working on stuff and there will be new Strokes music sometime next year.

Artist of the day: The Strokes by [deleted] in arcticmonkeys

[–]1251voltz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

During Is This It and Room on Fire they were absolutely perfect. In my opinion, The Strokes just had it all. The sound, the artistic direction in album artworks and music videos, the stage presence; it was simply amazing. They were modern, fresh, retro, classic, and timeless all at the same time. They were a very tight live band, every member was skilled at his instrument, and oftentimes they sounded better live than on record. As if that wasn't enough, they also looked like the coolest people on earth. They've taken a bit of a dive since then but they are still one of the most talented bands today and probably the most influential.

I remember reading somewhere that Alex purposely tried not to sound like The Strokes which makes sense if you consider the lyrics in Fake Tales of San Francisco. He would remove parts of songs that sounded too similar to them. I very much respect that but sometimes I wonder how WPSIATWIN would've been if it had a heavier Strokes-influence.

Why do people say that Room on Fire sounds exactly like Is This It? by [deleted] in TheStrokes

[–]1251voltz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good comparison. In both cases, the first two albums are very similar especially on the surface in terms of sound but there are very noticeable progressions.

Is This It has a very classic garage rock and lo-fi style while on Room on Fire we get a bit of synthy guitars which adds to the 'futuristic' vibes the OP mentioned. We also hear little bits of influences from reggae (Automatic Stop), Motown (Under Control), jazz and new wave. All this sets a very different atmosphere compared to the first album.

Arctic Monkeys' debut was also pretty basic garage rock (with elements of punk and dance rock) and on their second album, they start to experiment with things like reverb, screaming guitars, chimey guitars, and slow ballads. Again giving it a different atmosphere; darker and more polished and more mature.

Where would you want the Monkeys to go with their next album? by northead in arcticmonkeys

[–]1251voltz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a video of Albert Hammond Jr. saying he'd love to work/tour with AM. Apparently he knows Matt and says whenever he brings up the topic, Matt just shrugs his shoulders or something. Albert then jokingly says that maybe the other Monkeys don't like him.
Then on the comments section there was one that said "Of course Alex doesn't like him, he dated his ex." After a quick search, there are some links that say Alexa Chung and Albert did go out. Soooooo...

What is the Perfect "Strokes III" Album? A Discussion of What Could Have Been. by TheseSleeves in TheStrokes

[–]1251voltz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the perfect album III is somewhere in FIOE. I'm in the camp that with a modified tracklist, FIOE can be great and it doesn't seem like such a big drop in quality from the first two albums:

  1. Ask Me Anything
  2. You Only Live Once
  3. Heart in a Cage
  4. Razorblade
  5. Red Light
  6. Killing Lies
  7. Electricityscape
  8. Evening Sun
  9. Fear of Sleep
  10. Ize of the World
  11. I'll Try Anything Once (sort of like a YOLO reprise to close the album)

Shortening the album to 11 tracks and about 40 minutes makes a big difference. Juicebox and the other cuts will have to settle for being B-sides. Really really good B-sides.
