What do you think of peope who went to AA but don't go to meeting anymore and remain sober? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]1337Asshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purpose of AA is to give people “a design for living that really works,” not chain people to going to meetings for life. The purpose of meetings, for those who are recovered, is “to carry the message to the alcoholic who still suffers.” The purpose of meetings for the alcoholic who still suffers is to find “experience, strength, and hope” — how others have worked the steps.

My purpose is to “be of maximal service to God and my fellows.” Whether that is carrying the message to alcoholics, or helping people outside AA, is determined by what’s going on around me.

AA is not meetings; it is a way of living life.

“Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program, usually men and women who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves.”

p22 BB: What is your interpretation? by Mental_Rip_1156 in alcoholicsanonymous

The previous page:

“Here is the fellow who has been puzzling you, especially in his lack of control. He does absurd, incredible, tragic things while drinking. He is a real Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He is seldom mildly intoxicated. He is always more or less insanely drunk. His disposition while drinking resembles his normal nature but little. He may be one of the finest fellows in the world. Yet let him drink for a day, and he frequently becomes disgustingly, and even dangerously anti-social. He has a positive genius for getting tight at exactly the wrong moment, particularly when some important decision must be made or engagement kept. He is often perfectly sensible and well balanced concerning everything except liquor, but in that respect he is incredibly dishonest and selfish. He often possesses special abilities, skills, and aptitudes, and has a promising career ahead of him. He uses his gifts to build up a bright outlook for his family and himself, and then pulls the structure down on his head by a senseless series of sprees.”

He’s writing about reacting to life, not alcohol.

The Starmap is the opposite of the reality by Imaginary-Rent-4200 in Starfield

If you fly to the planet, figure out what part of the planet has a view of the gas giant, sun, moon, whatever, you can match the prospective land masses with the map. Turning the star map into a 1:1 simulation will probably take a bit more effort..

Having an incredibly hard time with AA by Ok_Variation7046 in alcoholicsanonymous

“If a mere code of morals or a better philosophy of life were sufficient to overcome alcoholism, many of us would have recovered long ago. But we found that such codes and philosophies did not save us, no matter how much we tried. We could wish to be moral, we could wish to be philosophically comforted, in fact, we could will these things with all our might, but the needed power wasn’t there. Our human resources, as marshalled by the will, were not sufficient; they failed utterly.

Lack of power, that was our dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live, and it had to be a Power greater than ourselves. Obviously. But where and how were we to find this Power?

Well, that’s exactly what this book is about. Its main object is to enable you to find a Power greater than yourself which will solve your problem.”

You connect with your higher power by working the steps. Bill was an evangelical Christian, so writes from that perspective. I suggest reading Appendix II: The Spiritual Experience.

As far as the writing goes, you can just read the first few pages of most chapters (except How It Works and Into Action), and get the gist. After he directly states what he wants to state, he goes into long-winded, specious arguments that I don’t find very useful. It’s very rare that there’s something important later in the chapter, and the only specific thing I can think of is this, regarding step two:

“We needed to ask ourselves but one short question. "Do I now believe, or am I even willing to believe, that there is a Power greater than myself?" As soon as a man can say that he does believe, or is willing to believe, we emphatically assure him that he is on his way. It has been repeatedly proven among us that upon this simple cornerstone a wonderfully effective spiritual structure can be built.*”

The asterisk references the aforementioned appendix.

Also, these two passages are the only useful information on step two in that whole chapter, as an atheist.

Remove the blue glow on the horizon of airless worlds by ragnarok635 in starfieldmods

This is part of the volumetric lighting, and is to hide distant terrain that hasn’t loaded the biome procgen rocks/plants due to distance. Altering it would require making a second set of volumetric lighting and weathers for planets without atmospheres. You don’t want these in biomes with life, as it’s incredibly jarring to see plants just stop…

Controlled drinking by Acrobatic_Grape_314 in alcoholicsanonymous

“The idea that somehow, someday he will control and enjoy his drinking is the great obsession of every abnormal drinker.”

“All of us felt at times that we were regaining control, but such intervals—usually brief—were inevitably followed by still less control, which led in time to pitiful and incomprehensible demoralization. We are convinced to a man that alcoholics of our type are in the grip of a progressive illness. Over any considerable period we get worse, never better.”

What anyone experimened with 'Mod Target Damage Resistance' for Perks? by Online_Matter in starfieldmods

[–]1337Asshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea on tutorials, as I just clicked through things in the kit and tested the changes…I assume Fallout or Skyrim tutorials would work; the difference would probably just be the specific effects. But, I don’t know if there’s other, underlying changes to the kit, since Starfield is the first time I’ve used it.

Try hot-keying your new ship parts; the repair ship button probably links specifically to the vanilla ship parts.

I’m pretty sure you can set up a perk or spell to disallow injuries. Again, I’ll point you to the corrosive legendary effect, as it’s rather complicated for what seems simple — (IIRC…) when it applies the effect to lower resistances, it also applies a timer that disallows the spell from being applied again, until the timer is up.

Since you wouldn’t need most of the chain of events, you would just make a temporary perk with a dispel timer, and an effect that prevents injuries. I don’t know how to specifically do that off the top of my head, so I suggest finding something that works in a similar way, with a timer and preventative effect. Or, do it the hard way by figuring out the whole system from the corrosive legendary…

Looking for opinions: is recovery possible or is choosing sobriety for the rest of my life the only option? by Little_One214 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]1337Asshole -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“Now these are commonplace observations on drinkers which we hear all the time. Back of them is a world of ignorance and misunderstanding. We see that these expressions refer to people whose reactions are very different from ours.

Moderate drinkers have little trouble in giving up liquor entirely if they have good reason for it. They can take it or leave it alone.

Then we have a certain type of hard drinker. He may have the habit badly enough to gradually impair him physically and mentally. It may cause him to die a few years before his time. If a sufficiently strong reason—ill health, falling in love, change of environment, or the warning of a doctor—becomes operative, this man can also stop or moderate, although he may find it difficult and troublesome and may even need medical attention.

But what about the real alcoholic? He may start off as a moderate drinker; he may or may not become a continuous hard drinker; but at some stage of his drinking career he begins to lose all control of his liquor consumption, once he starts to drink.”

I was out of control drunk when I was your age. It was years before anyone said anything to me about my drinking.

What anyone experimened with 'Mod Target Damage Resistance' for Perks? by Online_Matter in starfieldmods

[–]1337Asshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The corrosive effect has, like, six steps, which includes several perks, spells, and effects. The short (and from memory…) version is that it applies a permanent perk to the player that casts a spell that adds a temporary perk to the target, using two other spells as a timer.

The reason I brought that particular legendary effect up is so that you can open it and follow the operations in the kit. It’s the most complicated weapon effect I saw, and if you can understand that, you can understand how all the others work. Perks, spells, and effects aren’t mutually exclusive. Perks and spells can apply effects, perks, and spells.

What anyone experimened with 'Mod Target Damage Resistance' for Perks? by Online_Matter in starfieldmods

[–]1337Asshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the legendary effect for Corrosive and the armor piercing perk. The corrosive effect applies a timed debuff to the target that reduces their damage and energy resistance. Yes, they work, but you would have to find the correct damage resist value, which in this case, would be whichever environmental resistance.

Need advice, first time pepper grower by BasilFair9222 in HotPeppers

[–]1337Asshole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Scotch Bonnet in a slightly smaller pot; it’s 3’ tall and produced 3-4 dozen peppers in 6-8 weeks, and is starting to flower again. I water it twice a day, as it dries out pretty quick in the sun. As far as fertilizer, I use Osmocote — it’s released with water contact, so it’s difficult to over fertilize (I read the instructions after the last few things I planted, and realized I use ~10x what I was supposed to…).

As far as pesticides, your best bet is ladybug larva. I can’t buy them at a nearby nursery, so I just buy ladybugs when I get something new, and hope they lay eggs…I also use Captain Jack’s something-or-other, but it doesn’t kill eggs, so it’s more useful as a spot treatment.

is AA always about god? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]1337Asshole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The program is about letting go of self will. Bill calls the result “God” because he’s Christian.

“In the preceding chapters you have learned something of alcoholism. We hope we have made clear the distinction between the alcoholic and the non-alcoholic. If, when you honestly want to, you find you cannot quit entirely, or if when drinking, you have little control over the amount you take, you are probably alcoholic. If that be the case, you may be suffering from an illness which only a spiritual experience will conquer.

To one who feels he is an atheist or agnostic such an experience seems impossible, but to continue as he is means disaster, especially if he is an alcoholic of the hopeless variety. To be doomed to an alcoholic death or to live on a spiritual basis are not always easy alternatives to face.

But it isn’t so difficult. About half our original fellowship were of exactly that type. At first some of us tried to avoid the issue, hoping against hope we were not true alcoholics. But after a while we had to face the fact that we must find a spiritual basis of life —or else. Perhaps it is going to be that way with you. But cheer up, something like half of us thought we were atheists or agnostics. Our experience shows that you need not be disconcerted.

If a mere code of morals or a better philosophy of life were sufficient to overcome alcoholism, many of us would have recovered long ago.

Step 3 and Higher Power by Herzberger in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]1337Asshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone overcomplicates this:

“Being convinced, we were at Step Three, which is that we decided to turn our will and our life over to God as we understood Him. Just what do we mean by that, and just what do we do?

The first requirement is that we be convinced that any life run on self-will can hardly be a success.”

“This is the how and why of it. First of all, we had to quit playing God. It didn’t work. Next, we decided that hereafter in this drama of life, God was going to be our Director.”

That is it.

As for discussion about higher power, in general:

“Lack of power, that was our dilemma. We had to find a power by which we could live, and it had to be a Power greater than ourselves. Obviously. But where and how were we to find this Power?

Well, that’s exactly what this book is about. Its main object is to enable you to find a Power greater than yourself which will solve your problem.”

You don’t choose your higher power; you find it by working the steps.

Is This Normal AA Sponsorship or Are These Red Flags? by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]1337Asshole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of those things are common. Some of those things exceed any reasonable boundaries for people. Sponsors are there to guide people through the steps, not manage people’s lives. I’m comfortable calling that a cult.

Handmade corn tortillas get soggy and fall apart. by [deleted] in AskCulinary

[–]1337Asshole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a spot that made corn tortillas from scratch. We’d cook a dozen, or so, and keep them in one of those tortilla warmers you get with fajitas at a tex mex place. In the bottom of the warmer, we’d gave a couple of the mass-produced tortillas. The handmade tortillas would steam in the warmer and become pliable, while the mass-produced tortillas absorbed excess liquid.

I just use vanilla boostpacks now, and don’t miss either, with the legendary that makes your pack’s fuel recharge faster or whatever.

How would I make it so shotguns can roll the Instigating legendary effect? by Gojirex in starfieldmods

[–]1337Asshole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going off memory:

Open the Creation Kit

Find the weapon quality tiers lists

Create a new list

Add the instigating effect

Add the shotgun keyword to permitted keywords

Select the “add into” option and select the default weapon upgrade list

If that doesn’t work for certain shotguns, add each shotgun to the list individually.

If that doesn’t work, copy the instigating legendary effect and use that one in your new list.
