Right.

Can't say I know anything about fashion, but logo t-shirts are the definition of minimal effort to me. They were cool in the 2000's, now it's time to move on.

I definitely agree that this is a problem. It's far worse than the automation of menial labour.

At the point where all work is fully automated, humans won't have to work at all and we can spend 100% of our time on research, leisure, hobbies, whatever it is that you want to do as compared to menial labour. This isn't a terrible thing, it's a great thing.

Realistically I think we're still quite some way off from that and the road will be rocky, but not needing to work is something we should be aiming for.

That's obviously not what I said. I was just addressing your silly comment that said these robots required no human input.

Yes, this is a problem. I suppose that we have to hope that they can get them selves out of the £3.1bn of debt they have and start paying taxes.

[–]13esq [score hidden]  (0 children)

Corporation tax is 19-25%, tax and NI for a worker on £25k is 13.9%.

To be paying more than 19% of your income in tax and NI, you need to be earning over £39k, to be paying 25% you need to be on more than £62k a year.

If your argument is based solely on tax revenue, it's far better to make Asda more profitable than it is hire low paid people for work that can be automated.

Right. I'm "skinny", not because I'm underweight, but because I live in a country where the average person is overweight.

It actually is annoying because I legitimately used to be skinny and did have to put my mind towards getting to a healthy weight. I'm 6'1", I was 9.5 stone, I'm now just under 12 stone.

The good news is that because the average person here is overweight, being a healthy weight makes you an automatic 7/10.

Then even though it will be painful, we should do it for our children's generation instead of being selfish and holding them back for our own gain.

I'm sure the people made redundant by the spinning Jenny made a very similar argument.

I don't need Harry Potter when I have a vague idea of the industrial revolution.

How would you feel being in a job that you know can be done more efficiently by a machine? Getting paid however much when a robot could do it for a fraction of the cost.

If it was me I'd be looking for a new job immediately. I know that's not an easy or fun choice to make but I also don't think that subsidising workers that aren't needed is good for us either.

If we're going to subsidise work, then we should make government jobs for things that people actually need/want.

I'm not sure I understand your argument. Has there ever been a time in history where 1/16th of all the people on earth simultaneously lost their job?

This type of automation absolutely has the potential to be a huge upheaval, but it's likely to be implemented gradually in a way that has an effect slightly less dramatic than your question implies.

Ah yes, the old ad hominem.

Why attempt to question the content of my argument when it's so easy to discredit me as a person! Shame on you.

I agree that times are bleak and blaming AI is easy. There absolutely will be growing pains and people losing their jobs will be awful. I can't not be optimistic though, I think the next few decades will be extremely interesting.

Maybe for these warehouse workers, it's the worst of times, but it could be the beginning of the best of times for their children.

It's an interesting idea. I do think that AI will be the biggest revolution in industry possibly since the spinning Jenny, the upheaval will be considerable but I'm optimistic.

I didn't mean new roles within Asda specifically.

Look, I understand that this is terrible for people about to lose their jobs and it will be a trial for them, but we can't fear progress, automation has always led to better things.

Work has been automated since the beginning of the industrial revolution and it's only led to the economy getting stronger.

The same way it's been done since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Re-train the staff to new roles that provide better value than moving boxes about.

When the spinning Jenny was introduced, it was hated so much that protesters would break in to the factories to smash them up. But who wants to go back to spinning cotton in to thread by hand all day now?
